Just a month ago, BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah had promised to have Bangalore pothole-free in two weeks. That promise, however, has gone down the drain.
The deadline is now long past, and not even half the potholes in the city have been covered. And who's taking the blame this time? It's the rains that's been battering the city.
A list compiled by the city's zonal officers was handed to the BBMP only last week.
According to which, over 33,772 potholes have been identified in the city, but only 8,979 have been attended to. This time, the BBMP promises to cover the remaining 24,793 in the coming two weeks.
Siddaiah, BBMP Commissioner, said, "We have been forced to extend our deadline because there has been no respite from the rains.
Which is why we have not been able to complete our work, we are keeping track of the work that is going on in every zone."
He added that more money will be provided to wards if they need it, apart from the allotted Rs 1 lakh.
VT Ramesh, chief engineer, West Zone, said, "About 200 people have been working on this problem.
We've only managed to cover 2,590 potholes." He added, "The entire work will be completed either by the end of this month or by October 15."
Likewise, S Somashekar, chief engineer, East Zone, said, "We have stopped work in this zone for the last six days because of the heavy rains.
We had hoped that the work would be done this week, but it can only be completed by next week."
AK Gopalaswamy, engineer-in-chief of the BBMP, said, "Because of the heavy rains we cannot work on the bigger roads or on the main roads. But all the small ones have been taken care of.
It'll take us another two weeks to complete covering the remaining 24,000 potholes.
Bangaloreans, however, were not too surprised by the latest developments. Tinu Cherian (32), a software engineer, said, "The BBMP plan is just not feasible.

The work won't be done in two weeks. I am terribly inconvenienced by the potholes in the city. When I ride I have to navigate around them. I just don't see the roads improving."
Dr Naresh Shetty, Medical Director of MS Ramaiah Hospital, said, "These accidents seem to increase during the monsoon.
I see quite a few cases that are related to road accidents. In such cases, fractures can be quite serious."
