Reveals 84-year-old Kusum Devi, the first female police sub inspector of Maharashtra, in her autobiography
Kusum Devi, the first female Police Sub Inspector of Maharashtra, has revealed in her autobiography 'Duty First'that being part of the police department was quite a "challenging task."
Her book is scheduled to be released on December 6. Devi has given accounts of her days as a woman police officer and her experiences and challenges during her earlier days.
Devi had worked in CID, railway police and also the pioneering officer in tracing juvenile crime. She has also rescued many minor girls from the red light area in Pune in the 60s.
"Though I have many bitter experiences while working with the force, it has taught me to face odds in life,"Devi told MiD DAY.

"From my first day I had to fight for a separate toilet and office while working at Faraskhana Police Station in Pune," she said. "Especially my first seven years were filled with a lot of struggle, pain and sorrow," Devi recalled.
Inducted into the force as a PSI, Devi got her first promotion after 12 years as PI, but was unable to fulfill her dream of retiring as an ACP, like her male subordinates.
"Luck was not with me otherwise I would have also become the first woman ACP," she said.
At the age of 84, Devi resides in Erendawane and engages herself in writing and sharing her experiences with the working police personnel. "I am happy that I feel the change in the police force, and that there is more gender fairness in the force now," she said.
"The book has a fresh approach as it's the first and honest eyewitness account of the male dominated police force, when Devi started her career in the 1950s," said Sudhakar Joshi, Publisher Utkarsha Prakashan.
