Wary of vicious canines who chase their bikes, hapless policemen ask for four-wheelers for patrolling

The reason is that the roads in Chandra Layout and Arundhati Nagar areas are not even, and it becomes difficult to ride a two-wheeler if a dog is chasing them.

Interestingly, the dogs can recognise the sound made by a walkie-talkie, and chase the policemen on hearing the crackle.

According to a Chandra Layout police official, over 1,000 dogs roam the streets freely, and are more active in the night.

Because of this, police personnel rarely visit this area at night. For the same reason, junior police officials don't want the night shift.

This is nothing new for the residents, who are too scared to come out of their homes after 8 pm. They have appealed to officials several times, but to no avail.

Request for koyta

So wary are these police officers that they have put in requests for deadlier weapons like a 'koyta', as opposed to the standard-issue lathis, for protection from these canines.

According to a Chandra Layout police official, over 1,000 dogs roam the streets freely, and are more active in the night. They also destroy garbage bags, and spill the contents on the road.

T Chennegouda, a police constable from the Chandra Layout police station, said, "Night shift is hell for us. We want a day shift."

These dogs are too smart, according to residents, who add that the dogs are nowhere to be seen when catchers arrive.

The BBMP is trying to sterilise the dogs but rarely do they catch them.

Prakash Gedi, a cop, said, "We can't figure out how they get to know when the catchers are around.

They give them the slip, and to top it, some organisations have banned their killing. So the residents have asked us for help and we are helpless."
