Dr Shirish Prayag says the Marathi writer had a loss of memory
The death ofu00a0 Sahitya Academy winner and prolific Marathi writer Sunitabai Deshpande has left Dr Shirish Prayag sad and gloomy. Dr Prayag was treating Deshpande for the past few years, and had bonded with the writer.
Deshpande, who passed away on Saturday, was suffering from Senile Dementia an advanced-age Alzheimer disease.
"She could not even recognise me when I went to see her three months ago," said Dr Prayag.
Describing her condition, Dr Prayag, chief intensivist, Shree Medical Foundation and Director, Prayag Hospital, told MiD DAY that she was bed ridden from last one and half year, after a fall in the bathroom.
She had chronic arthritis and also suffered two heart attacks in the last two years. "She was undergoing treatment at Prayag Hospital when veteran playwright Vijay Tendulkar was also in the same hospital," said Prayag.
Sunitabai was not willing to undergo any aggressive treatment at the hospital, and preferred to spend her last days at home, he said.
"Sunitabai and her late husband Pu La were both my patients since last two decades. Pu La died due to pneumonia with an acute respiratory problem about eight years back," he said.
Describing Sunitabai as an emotionally strong but sensible person, Prayag said that the couple was extremely generous in donating huge sums to the right causes and did it completely incognito, never expecting any returns for the same, he added.
