Ramjas College teachers alleges that the road in front being made one-way to save St Stephen's College where Prime Minister's daughter is a faculty

The Commonwealth Games construction sites on North Campus have become a bone of contention for colleges that have been traditionally been involved in the game of one-upmanship.
And sometimes it is not for the sake of the construction but for the relative ease or trouble that is being meted out to a rival college.

Dead end: Ramjas college is providing land for Commonwealth Games projects

To discuss a similar issue, the teachers at Ramjas College went into an emergency huddle on Tuesday. It was to condemn the move to make the road in front of the college one-way, owing to the construction for a Games site nearby. However, the problem was not just the road but the road in front of the nearby St. Stephen's college too.

The teachers were angry as to why the same treatment was not being meted out to their more famous neighbour.

"Ramjas College and St. Stephen's College are on the same stretch. It is only divided by a traffic signal. But still the one in front of our college is made one way while the other remains untouched. We doubt that such decision has been taken due to the political pressure. Since Prime Minister's daughter is residing in St. Stephen's College premises, others have been left to suffer," alleged Dhani Ram, Secretary, Ramjas Staff Council.

Ramjas College faculty members and students also held a demonstration on the campus last week in protest against the alleged manner of takeover of college land for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. The college had consented in November last to surrendering 865 square metres of land from its premises for widening of roads.

Later, according to a revised plan, instead of 865 sq. m. the college was asked in January to surrender 112 sq. m. at the Principal's bungalow premises near Kranti Chowk and 745 sq. m. at Kranti Chowk (which included the parking lot in the college premises) along Sudhir Bose Marg and at Maurice Nagar Chowk.

The college has reportedly asked for Rs.13.3 crore as compensation to build underground parking, stilt parking on the ground floor and other structures.
Ramjas College Principal, Dr. Rajendra Prasad said, "We have cooperated with preparations for the Commonwealth Games and wish to continue to do so."
