With most city NGOs pleading helplessness because of a heavy workload, organisations from Hyderabad and Mumbai have been handed the charge of ridding Bangalore of its canine menace.

Out of the seven NGOs which will be working to sterilise dogs in nearly 200 wards in the city, only three are from Bangalore. Two NGOs each from Mumbai and Hyderabad make up the other four.

BBMP's Deputy Director (Animal Husbandry), M A Parmeshwar, said, "We have a few NGOs working with us and there is also one private veterinary doctor from Hyderabad."

The NGOs have been handed work in 'packages' with each package consisting of 10 to 12 wards. A total of 20 packages have been authorised and the NGOs will receive a fee of Rs 600 for each dog sterilised.

"Once the dogs have been sterilised, they'll be put back in the same vicinity. We can't kill them and we don't have any dog pounds to take them to," added Parmeshwar.

Mumbai's Sarvodaya Seva Bhavi's Project Co-ordinator Vinay Moray, said, "We'll start in about 10 days. We've been given two packages and our target is to sterilise and vaccinate both sexes. A team of 12 members, including four doctors, has been assigned to each package."

Karnati Srinivas, general secretary, Animal Welfare society, Hyderabad, said, "We began our work in October and we have sterilised and vaccinated 761 dogs of both sexes. We've covered four packages as of now."

H A Vale from People For Animals, a Bangalore-based NGO, said they couldn't participate in the project as their hands were full. "Our hands are full with the urban wildlife right now. We have no time, there's always something going on."

1.83 lakh Number of stray dogs in the city according to the last BBMP stray dog census
