Canteen contractor alleges his contract was terminated without any reason and despite an assurance for extension

Credit card companies have virtually blacklisted the three Psu00a0-- Press, Police and Prosecutors (read lawyers).

After going through the travails of a canteen contractor at Kirori Mal College, teachers just might be added to that list.

And the faculty is not the only alleged culprit. Other departments of the college owe the contractor a whopping
Rs 1,62,000.

Bharat Satija, who used to run the Kirori Mal College canteen, was asked to leave by the college administration in November last year. He was given a ten-day notice. Satija claimed he did not get enough time to get his money back as the notice period was short. However, he vacated the premises and asked the college principal to help him.

Satija ran the canteen from October 2007 to November 2008.

"Some staff members personally came to me for clearing their dues. But many of them never approached me.

It's almost over a year now and I have been pleading the college authorities to pass necessary directions but it has failed to help," Satija told MiD DAY.

The contractor alleged he repeatedly requested college principal Bhim Sen Singh in writing (copies of which is with MiD DAY) to pass necessary directions to the defaulters, as he himself is no longer associated with the college.

When MiD DAY contacted some of the professors and non-teaching staff, most of them refused to respond to queries.

Dr Sumitra Mohanty Chakrabarti of Physics department, who allegedly owes Rs 2,116, refused to comment, saying she is out of the city and will return after ten days. Manju Jain, section officer (administration) said,
"I am clueless. It would be better if you talk to the people concerned." According to the complaint, Jain owed
Rs 2,452.

Madan Mohan Goel (administrative officer), who owes the highest amount of Rs 5,108, said: "It is a democracy and anybody can say anything he wants. If he can show me the bills with my signature, I will pay the entire amount." When he left the canteen in November 2008, Satija also left behind some utensils. The college wrote to him in October this year, saying the utensils have turned into breeding ground for mosquitoes and should be removed within five days.

"As I was out of town, I asked my brother to collect them (utensils) on my behalf. However, when he reached there he found many of them missing and some being used by the present contractor. He refused to take part delivery and returned," Satija alleged.

When MiD DAY got in touch with the college principal, he refused to speak on the issue and said, "You can write whatever you want to."

After exhausting all his options, Satija sent a legal notice to the college in November this year, demanding payment of around Rs 5 lakh outstanding under various heads and towards compensation within 15 days.u00a0

"Fifteen days have already expired but we have not received any reply from the college. Now, we will take the college to court," said Satija.

Make believe

Virtual classroom is the reality of the 21st century. More and more courses, including the most prestigious CAT have shifted to online exams. Many universities and colleges, especially those offering vocational courses, are moving towards online tutorials and exams.

If all goes well virtually, teachers in flesh and blood and acres of campus area would soon be part of legend. Had it been so, Satija would not have been running from pillar to post for realising his dues.

The Other Side
