Considering the shortage of AC local trains that the Central Railway (CR) is facing, the authorities concerned said on Thursday that they were thinking of introducing the AC locals on the Goregaon route and the main line’s fast corridor by diverting some of the existing services. mid-day had published an article last week on how a temporary shortage of AC locals came to the fore on the eve of the opening of the new Diva-Thane corridor. While the CR has four AC trains and two more are expected, the WR has seven AC trains.

Central Railway General Manager Anil Kumar Lahoti said that they have received good response for the AC train services on the mainline, but it might further improve if they are introduced on the longer routes of fast trains. “We may also get good response on the harbour line if it is introduced on the Goregaon route instead of Panvel,” Lahoti added. This would mean discontinuing the existing harbour and trans-harbour AC train services, which might inconvenience the existing passengers.

Lahoti said that they would think on the matter comprehensively and if any decision was taken at all, commuters would be given adequate time before discontinuing the services. Of the four AC trains, CR has introduced three on the main, trans-harbour and harbour lines, respectively. They run a total of 38 services. Of these, 10 AC train services had been introduced on the main line of CR on December 17, 2020.

The first set of AC train services were introduced on the trans-harbour line on January 30, 2020. Now with 12 AC train services introduced on a replacement basis on the harbour line since December 1 this year, the number of AC services has gone up to 38. Lahoti said the Diva-Thane line work would be completed by early February next year, following which trains will be diverted on the new lines.

Redevelopment of CSMT, Dadar station

The CSMT station, being redeveloped by the CR, will be done on a hybrid model to involve more bidders, wherein the private developer will be repaid the funds used for the station’s development. A site visit of the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is expected on December 24. Meanwhile, there is also an elaborate plan to remodel Dadar station.
