A similar cleaning initiative has been started by the Railways. The Western Railway commissioned an automatic coach washing plant recently at Mumbai Central with a three-pronged benefit — it will help save time, water and manpower. Railways officials vouched for its efficacy.
This development is so heartening, especially the fact that the new plans call upon all alert citizens to apprise authorities, especially in the case of buses, if they are unclean. The basic repairs part is good too. A general look overall will show us that broken seats, frayed overhead handles and, at times, sharp metal objects inside vehicles are the hazards to commuting.
Extend this cleanliness consciousness to other aspects, too, like our platforms, bus stops and depots where hygiene and upkeep should top the charts.
Having said that, there is an onus on users too — not to dirty vehicles, or vandalise them. If those who helm these facilities display a cleanliness consciousness, it is up to users to respect that with a cleanliness conscience. Hygiene and maintenance is a two-way affair — those in charge and commuters depend on each other to adhere to the cleanliness mantra.
The pandemic has shone the spotlight on sanitisation. The realisation is one that we should carry with us, much beyond this crisis.
