“While an official decision is yet to be taken, I think a two-week curfew after May 1 should be in place only then we can hope to see a reduction in numbers by May-end,” the official said.

Maharashtra health minister Rajesh Tope on Saturday said that 'break the chain' restrictions, in place in the state to tackle the surge in coronavirus cases, may be extended beyond May 1 depending on the situation. “We may extend these restrictions beyond May 1, depending on the situation. A decision will be finalised only after reviewing the outcome of these 15 days (when the restrictions will be in place)," he had said.

Mid-day online spoke to Dr. Daksha Shah, deputy executive health officer of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) about the possible extension of the lockdown-style curfew. She said, “A two-week extension of curfew after May 1 is required if we aim to break the chain.”

“Some of the most hard-hit countries brought the situation in control through strict curfews and lockdowns. So I think an extended lockdown will be beneficial for the city, given that during this period people tend to travel frequently owing to the summer vacations,” she added.

“An extended curfew will also make sure that public gatherings, get togethers, parties, etc. are not taking place for a longer time and that will help bring the numbers down. The aim of this initiative is to put a ban on gatherings and ensure COVID-appropriate behaviour. Even private offices should make sure that their employees are working from home.”

“While an official decision is yet to be taken, I think a two-week extension of curfew after May 1 should be in place only then we can hope to see a reduction in numbers by May-end,” she added.
