Police in Thane district, Maharashtra, apprehended two individuals for allegedly slaughtering cows and illegally transporting beef, an official confirmed on Wednesday.
The incident occurred in the early hours of May 5 at Ranjnoli Naka in Bhiwandi, when a tempo with illegal goods was intercepted, reported PTI.

Upon inspection, authorities discovered roughly 700 kilograms of beef worth over Rs 2.60 lakh inside the car. A police official told PTI, "During its inspection, it came to light that the tempo was transporting beef. The police seized a total of around 700 kilograms of the meat worth around Rs 2.60 lakh."
According to the report, Yusuf Bikan Sheikh (25), a driver, and Ramzan Ibrahim Sheikh (28), a worker, were arrested.
An inquiry is underway to determine the origins of the confiscated products. An FIR has been filed against the couple under Section 429 (mischief by killing or maiming livestock) of the Indian Penal Code and the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, the report added.
"The police are trying to find out the source of the goods," the station house officer of the Kongaon police station said.
In another incident in Maharashtra's Gondia district, two revenue officers and another individual are facing charges after allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from two suppliers of building materials, as per the Anti-Corruption Bureau.
On May 4, revenue personnel apprehended two sand-laden tippers belonging to the suppliers and transported them to the Goregaon tehsil office. Both suppliers were then asked to pay a fine of Rs 1,23,883 apiece, reported PTI and it further added that although the tippers were carrying two brass sands each, revenue officers wrongly classified them as tractors carrying one brass sand each when creating the indemnification bond, according to an ACB official.
On May 6, the providers paid the fines and gave receipts to the tehsil office, expecting their vehicles to be returned. However, a buddy warned them that in order to return their trucks and resume sand transportation, they would each have to pay a bribe of Rs 50,000 to a revenue official. The officer requested that the money be handed over to a computer operator on his behalf, the PTI report further stated.
The news agency report said, the suppliers then filed a complaint with the ACB. After validating the complaint, the Goregaon police filed a case against the two revenue officers and the computer operator under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Furthermore, the ACB pointed out that one of the accused revenue officers was previously implicated in a bribery case in 2017, where he allegedly accepted a bribe of Rs 10 lakh.
