03 December,2024 12:08 AM IST | Mumbai | Shirley BoseThe Prakash Ambedkar-led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) on Monday announced that it will launch a Maharashtra-wide agitation against the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). According to news agency PTI, the party said that in the first phase of its agitation, VBA will start a signature campaign from Tuesday against the use of EVMs in elections, and the stir will continue till December 16. The decision to launch the anti-EVM agitation was taken at the party's state executive meeting held in Pune on Sunday, 10 days after the state assembly election results which saw the ruling Mahayuti coalition registering a landslide majority, PTI reported. The regional outfit led by the grandson of social reformer BR Ambedkar failed to open its account in the November 20 polls. The VBA warned to intensify its agitation against the EVMs in a phased manner, reported PTI. The debacle of opposition parties in the Maharashtra polls rekindled the old debate on the credibility and reliability of EVMs with some rivals of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) calling for a return to traditional ballot papers. Among the Mahayuti parties, the BJP emerged victorious on 132 seats, followed by the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena (57) and Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (41). The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) suffered a major setback, with the Congress winning just 16 seats and Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) winning 20 and 10 seats, respectively. Meanwhile, NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar also raised the issue of EVMs on Monday and challenged the Election Commission to probe into the allegations of tampering of the machines. "In 2017, you [Election Commission] had allowed the opposition parties to do some investigation with EVM but what had happened was that you specifically told not to touch the machine. So I would request as a citizen of this country to allow us to operate any EVM in the presence of the media. We will bring our technical team, all opposition parties and those in power will also be there, just give us 15 minutes...," he stated, according to ANI. "Doubts need to be cleared and once it is cleared that the machine is foolproof, then no one will speak against EVM or Election Commission but to clear those doubts at least one opportunity has to be given...we are just saying what people are talking about...," Rohit Pawar added.Maharashtra's Chief Electoral Officer, S Chockalingam, has warned of strict legal action against individuals spreading false claims or insinuations regarding tampering with EVMs. (With ANI and PTI inputs)
02 December,2024 11:09 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentThe 11.75-metre-long and 10.10-metre-wide elevated deck at Khar Station, with staircase at platforms 3 and 4, connecting the north footover (FOB) bridge was opened to public at 5.30 pm on Monday. The structure has been built by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation to decongest the station. Sources said Khar is one of the stations that is now also getting a commercial and office space above it. The development of Khar Station can take the load off Bandra Station as Khar has already been linked with the Bandra Terminus directly with a 44-m-long and 6-m-wide footover bridge at a cost of Rs 4.55 crore by Western Railway. With a payback period of five and seven years, respectively, Khar Road and Bhayander stations of Western Railway were found feasible by the consultant for retail/food and beverage outlets. "The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation is remodelling smaller stations and upgrading them for future use as lines and corridors are set to expand with more and more passengers expected to use them," an MRVC spokesperson said.
02 December,2024 10:45 PM IST | Mumbai | Rajendra B. AklekarShiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) legislator Varun Sardesai on Monday claimed that the trends in postal ballots and electronic voting machine (EVM) results of the Maharashtra Assembly polls appear "inconsistent", raising doubts about the integrity of the EVM system. According to news agency PTI, Sardesai, who defeated Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) Zeeshan Siddique to win the Vandre East Assembly seat in the debut contest, also claimed a suspicious spike in voter turnout during the final two hours of polling and demanded a reply from the Election Commission. Sardesai, in a press conference in Mumbai, claimed that "statistical anomalies" were observed in the Election Commission's official data, and called for greater transparency and accountability. "While I am not making direct allegations, the data raises several doubts that must be addressed," he said, according to PTI. The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader also claimed that that postal ballots, which largely represent soldiers, senior citizens, essential service workers, and government employees, "generally align with the overall voter sentiment in their constituencies". "Trends in postal ballots were consistent with EVM results in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections (when the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) parties won 30 out of 48 seats in Maharashtra). However, in the assembly elections, a striking divergence was observed," Sardesai said. 'MVA candidates saw 5-15 per cent decline in votes from postal to EVM results' Citing an example, Sardesai said that MVA was leading in 31 constituencies througout the postal ballot counting, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Mahayuti was ahead in 16 constituencies. "Yet, the final EVM results showed MVA securing only 46 seats, while the Mahayuti tally surged to 230 seats [in Maharashtra Assembly polls]," he said, according to PTI. Sardesai further claimed that his party leader Aaditya Thackeray received 874 postal votes and 62,450 EVM votes from the Worli Constituency in Mumbai, while Milind Deora, who was the Mahayuti candidate, secured 522 postal votes and 54,001 EVM votes. According to Sardesai, this "pattern" extended beyond Shiv Sena (UBT). "Congress leader Nana Patole was ahead by 54 per cent in postal ballots but saw a sharp 12.7 per cent drop in EVM counts," stated Sardesai. He also claimed that Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) leader Jayant Patil, who had 70 per cent of postal votes, experienced an 18 per cent decline in EVM results. According to Sardesai, this trend was never observed in the previous elections. The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader also mentioned the Kolhapur South, Tivsa, and Ghatkopar East constituencies where MVA candidates "leading in postal ballots saw significant drops in EVM counts." "How is it possible that in almost every case, MVA candidates experienced a 5 to 15 per cent decline in votes from postal to EVM results, while Mahayuti candidates saw an equivalent rise? This raises serious doubts about the integrity of the EVM system," he said, appealing to the Election Commission to "address these issues", stating that its "primary responsibility is to ensure free and fair elections." "Why were the trends seen in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections so dramatically different in the Maharashtra Assembly Elections? Any doubts in the electoral process must be resolved to maintain public confidence," he added. (With PTI inputs)
