As many as three godowns were gutted in a major fire that erupted in a complex in Bhiwandi town of Maharashtra's Thane district on Sunday, the civic officials said, reported the PTI.

They said that no casualties were reported in the incident.

The blaze erupted in a godown, which had drums containing chemicals, at a complex in Rahnal around noon, civic disaster management officer Sakib Kharbe said, as per the PTI.

The fire spread to two adjacent godowns where yarn cones and scrap materials were stored, he said.

While no one was injured in the incident, the three godowns were completely gutted, the official said.

Four fire engines, including three from Bhiwandi and one from the Kalyan Dombivili Municipal Corporation (KDMC), were pressed into service and the blaze was brought under control by 4.30 pm, he said.

Due to the presence of the drums containing chemicals, the surroundings were engulfed in thick smoke and a foul smell pervaded the area.

The cooling operations are underway and the cause for the fire is yet to be ascertained, the official said.

In an another incident in Thane, a fire erupted in the meter room of a residential building in Maharashtra's Thane city in the early hours of Sunday, the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) said.

No casualties were reported in the blaze that broke out in the meter room of a ground-plus three-storey building around 3.30 am, chief of the civic disaster management cell Yasin Tadvi said, reported the PTI.

Twelve electricity meters were destroyed in the incident, the cause of which is yet to be ascertained, he said.

Local firemen and the RMDC team rushed to the spot and put out the blaze within half an hour, the official said.

Meanwhile, on Thursday, a fire broke out at a medical shop in Thane district of Maharashtra, the Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) had earlier said.

No one was injured in the incident, the officials said.

After the information was received, the Thane Fire Brigade and other civic officials rushed to the spot and launched a fire fighting operation, the RDMC said.
