An Indian Army soldier missing since last week died after he was hit by a train at midnight on Sunday, police said. Bhupendra Singh Omprakash Tokas, 31, was from the Army’s Ludhiana unit and had come to the city to pursue the course of petroleum technician.

As per the Government Railway Police (GRP), a man was hit by a train while crossing the tracks between Mira Road and Dahisar. GRP took him to the hospital but he was declared dead on arrival. The man was later identified as Tokas.

The police said Tokas left the Army unit at Colaba’s Navy Nagar on November 30 without informing anyone. After he didn’t return, a missing complaint was filed.

“We had received a missing complaint and were searching for him. Tokas’s mobile was switched off. The Vasai GRP informed us that Tokas died in an accident while crossing the railway line,” said Rajkumar Dongre, senior inspector of Cuffe Parade police station.

Sources at Vasai GRP said the death of the jawan seemed like an accident. “We will probe all angles, as he was missing for six days. He had switched off his number. He used another SIM card for a while but switched off that, too,” said a source.

Tokas belonged to Harsholi village in Alwar district of Rajasthan. His relative Suryaprakash Badra said, “His family members called me saying they were unable to reach Tokas. They asked me to file a missing complaint on their behalf.”

Badras said Tokas was married and was the father of two little girls. “No one knows why Tokas left the unit without infor-ming anyone.”
