BJP MLA Parag Shah, the sitting legislator in Mumbai, was allegedly involved in an altercation with an auto-rickshaw driver in the Ghatkopar area on Friday, during which he slapped the driver. The incident was captured in a video which has gone viral on social media. The incident took place in the afternoon on Mahatma Gandhi Road. A video of the episode surfaced online, showing Shah stopping an auto-rickshaw that was allegedly being driven in the wrong direction and slapping the driver during the confrontation. The clip has since circulated widely on social media. Parag Shah is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party and has represented Ghatkopar East in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly since 2019. He previously served as a corporator in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). An official said that so far no FIR or formal complaint has been received in connection with the incident, as Mumbai Police are yet to determine the exact jurisdiction where it took place. Officials from the Ghatkopar and Pant Nagar police stations said that the location of the incident does not fall under their jurisdiction. Meanwhile, Tilak Nagar police said they are verifying whether the spot comes under their limits. In a post on X, Gaikwad accused BJP legislators of misusing power and targeting the poor. She said BJP MLAs had become so arrogant that they were now assaulting auto-rickshaw drivers on the road. Referring to the Ghatkopar incident, Varsha Gaikwad said the MLA allegedly attacked the driver for violating traffic rules. She claimed that BJP leaders take the law into their own hands because they feel protected by those in power. Gaikwad further alleged that the BJP favours big industrialists and contractors, while showing harshness towards poor and working-class citizens. "This is the real BJP," she wrote, claiming the party rolls out the red carpet for wealthy business interests but takes pride in beating poor and hardworking people.

The leopard was captured after it entered a densely populated locality and attacked several residents, triggering panic among locals. On Saturday, Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, along with local MLA Narendra Mehta, visited the spot where the attacks took place. The minister later went to the hospital to meet the injured victims and check on their condition. Officials said the visit was aimed at reviewing the situation on the ground and reassuring residents after the incident. Radio collar to help monitor movement According to a source from the Forest Department, the minister informed the media that a radio collar may be fitted on the leopard before it is released back into the forest. “The Forest Department may fit a radio collar on the animal to monitor its movement after it is released into its natural habitat,” the source said. Radio collars are used to track the movement of wild animals and help forest officials prevent future human-wildlife conflicts by closely monitoring their location.

The incident, which happened on Monday at a function where AYUSH doctors were handed appointment letters, triggered a controversy across social media. "The CM is, perhaps, older than the father of the woman in question. I have a daughter, and I could sense the fatherly affection he had expressed," the Bihar Minister asserted. More than 1000 AYUSH doctors were handed appointment letters at the function, and 10 of them, including a woman Nusrat Parveen, who was wearing a hijab. To carry out the work in connection with the sixth line on Kandivali and Borivali section, a block of 30 days will be undertaken from the night of December 20th/21st and will continue up to January 18. WR's chief public relations officer Vineet Abhishek said the work involves track slewing and insertion and removal of multiple crossovers at Kandivali and Borivali. Major works of the engineering, signalling and overhead equipment will be carried out, which will impact train operations. Consequently, some suburban, passenger and mail/express trains will be affected. During the period from December 20th/21st to December 25th/26th, the block will be operated from 11pm to 04:30 am. Due to the block and suspension of fifth line, some suburban services will remain cancelled. "For December 31 all efforts are being made to ensure unusual cancellations for the convenience for New Year celebrations," he said. What will be affected Amid the operational work that will be carried out by the authorities, the fifth line of the WR will remain suspended for passenger trains running during the block. While the Western Railways have also affirmed that there will be speed restrictions imposed on other lines that will ultimately delay the travel time. All trains working on the fifth line i.e mail/express and suburban trains will be operated on fast line between Andheri/Goregaon and Borivali. The authorities have also stated that several suburban local services will be cancelled, leading to congestion and delays. Block timings From midnight on December 20 to December 25, the block will be operated daily between 11:00 pm and 4:30 pm. Gandhi has been asked to furnish a fresh surety as Shivraj Patil Chakurkar, who was the surety holder in the private defamation case before the Bhiwandi court, passed away on December 12, Iyer said, reported PTI. Senior Congressman Chakurkar, a former Union home minister and Lok Sabha speaker, died in his native Latur at the age of 90. "The next date of hearing has been fixed for January 17. National Herald case: ED moves Delhi HC against trial court order refusing cognisance of charge sheet against Gandhis The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday approached the Delhi High Court (HC) challenging a trial court order that refused to take cognisance of its prosecution complaint against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and others in the National Herald case, news agency PTI reported. The plea is likely to come up for hearing next week. The ED has assailed the trial court’s order issued on Wednesday, which held that taking cognisance of the agency’s complaint was “impermissible in law” as it was not based on a first information report (FIR). The court ruled that an investigation and the consequent prosecution complaint under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) are not maintainable in the absence of an FIR for a scheduled offence, PTI reported. The trial court noted that the ED’s probe stemmed from a private complaint and not from an FIR. It said that as cognisance was being declined on a pure question of law, it was not necessary to examine arguments on the merits of the allegations. The court further observed that despite a complaint filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy and the summoning order issued in 2014, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has not registered an FIR in connection with the alleged scheduled offence so far, PTI reported. “However, the ED went ahead with recording an ECIR relating to money laundering on June 30, 2021, when no FIR (with the CBI or any other law enforcement agency) existed in relation to the scheduled offence,” the court said. The NCP has further asserted that the video has been deliberately spread with the malicious intent of tarnishing the image of the party and its leadership. As reported by news agency IANS, the party in a statement emphasised that the video, widely circulated by political opponents across media and social platforms on the eve of the second phase of Nagar Parishad and Nagar Panchayat elections, represents a cheap and petty attempt to mislead the public through technological manipulation and misinformation. The second phase of Maharashtra local body elections is underway on Saturday. The release highlighted, “The NCP immediately lodged a formal police complaint upon becoming aware of the video. Subsequently, a forensic examination was sought. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) report has now conclusively confirmed that the video in question is fake and AI-generated.” “The forensic findings are being placed in the public domain to ensure transparency and to establish the facts beyond any doubt,” as cited by news agency IANS. It further said that the incident reflects the growing misuse of technology by those who lack political credibility and public support, reported by IANS. The party pointed out that creating artificial outrage through fabricated content is no substitute for genuine political engagement or electoral strength. The release further added, “NCP sends a clear message to those behind this act: if you wish to challenge us, do so in the democratic arena. Face us in elections. Seek the mandate of the people. Resorting to falsehoods, digital forgery, and misinformation will only erode your own credibility,” as cited by news agency IANS. Nobody was injured in the incident, said Saquib Kharbe, who heads the disaster management cell of the Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation (BNMC), reported PTI. He said the blaze erupted at the godown situated in Parasnath Compound at 11 AM. At least two fire engines rushed to the spot and launched firefighting operations. Fire breaks out at Thane banquet hall, over 1,000 wedding guests escape unhurt In another incident, more than 1,000 wedding guests escaped without any injury after a fire broke out at a banquet hall in Maharashtra's Thane city, officials said on Friday. The incident occurred around 11 pm on Thursday at the marriage hall premises in the Ovala area along the Ghodbunder Road in the city, they said. According to Yasin Tadvi, chief of the Disaster Management Cell of the Thane Municipal Corporation, "Mandap decoration materials kept outside a cabin on the lawn of 'The Blue Roof Club' caught fire. A wedding reception was underway at the venue at the time." The official said that 1,000 to 1,200 guests had gathered at the venue at the time of the incident. "As soon as the fire was noticed, guests were safely moved out of the venue, preventing any casualties," he said. Fire officials said timely alertness and swift evacuation played a key role in "averting a major tragedy". The firefighting operation involved two fire engines, one rescue vehicle, and one utility vehicle. An official said the fire was extinguished by around midnight. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, he added. Fire breaks out in meter box room of Thane building Meanwhile, a fire broke out on Friday afternoon in the meter box room on the ground floor of the New Narsimha Building in Thane (West), civic officials said. According to the Thane Municipal Corporation’s Disaster Management Cell, the incident was reported at around 12.48 pm by the Jawaharbagh Fire Station. The fire, triggered by a cable inside the meter box room, occurred in the ground-plus-eight-storey residential Thane building located near Deluxe Hotel in the Mahagiri Koliwada area. Personnel from the Thane Nagar Police, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), the Disaster Management Cell—along with one pickup vehicle—and the fire brigade, which deployed a fire engine, rushed to the spot. The fire at the Thane building was swiftly brought under control and completely extinguished. No injuries were reported, and the situation is now stable, officials said.

Voting began at 7:30 AM and will continue till 5:30 PM. Counting of votes for all municipal councils and nagar panchayats, including those which went to polls on December 2, will take place on December 21, the State Election Commission said in a statement. In the first phase, votes were cast for 263 municipal councils and nagar panchayats. Municipal presidents and members had been elected unopposed in many places. Counting of votes at all concerned locations will begin at 10 am on December 21. In some places, the ruling alliance partners, including the BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar's NCP, are contesting against each other. With this, mail express trains will no longer be operated on the local line between Bandra and Borivali, resulting in less congestion on Western Railway. “A 30-day block will be in place from December 20, 2025, in view of the sixth line work in the Borivali-Kandivali section. During this period, some trains will be short-terminated/originated, regulated, and rescheduled, and some trains will skip their scheduled halt at Borivali station,” a senior official said. Work is carried out to ensure express and local trains are segregated between Bandra and Borivali. The fifth line will remain suspended for passenger train operations, and speed restrictions will be imposed on other lines. Key benefits of sixth line Reduced congestion on existing lines: The sixth line adds extra track capacity on one of the world’s busiest suburban corridors. This helps spread rail traffic more evenly, easing overcrowding on the current tracks between Bandra Terminus and Borivali.
