Sarangi Mahajan: BJP is not anyone's private property

It’s official, Sarangi Mahajan is a member of the BJP party. The wife of late Pravin Mahajan paid homage to the Siachen martyrs as an active member of the party, at an event organised by the Thane Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at Thane Railway station yesterday.

“Yes, I am an active member of the BJP. The party will not throw me out due to pressure from any member of the Mahajan family. The party is not anybody’s private property,” she told sunday midday when asked about how Her brother-in-law and late BJP veteran Pramod Mahajan’s survivors would take the news.

Mahajan’s daughter Poonam is Member of Parliament from Mumbai North Central, and has been projected as his legitimate political heir. She did not respond to call and text messages by this reporter.

On April 22, 2006, BJP leader Pramod was shot at by his brother Pravin, over a family dispute. Pravin had surrendered himself to the police soon after.

He was sentenced to lifetime imprisonment December 22, 2007. On March 3, 2010, he died of a brain haemorrhage at a Thane hospital.

This was Sarangi Mahajan’s first appearance as an official BJP member at a political function. She faded from the news after her husband’s death.

Rishikesh Angre, BJP member from Thane unit, said, “Sarangi has been working actively with the Thane unit since last year. That is the reason why we decided to invite her for the function.”

Sarangi, who grew up in Nagpur, claimed, said she isn't new to the party.

BJP background
“My family was associated with the RSS, and I was an active student member of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) too. I got married into a family that was associated with the BJP. My husband's death was a setback for me. For the last three years, I have been involved in social work and last year, I felt it was time to get politically active.”

The BjP, she said, doesn't hold personal background as criteria to enroll members.

“I am not in touch with anyone from the Mahajan family. My priority was my family. But now, my social life has picked up and I am working for the party,” said Sarangi, who is mother to twins Kapil and Vrushali, though not much is known about them.
