The situation has become so dire that locals prefer travelling 5 to 6 extra kilometres through Gorai to reach Chikuwadi instead of directly entering via Link Road, just to avoid the mess caused by blocked roads and dug-up lanes. Reacting to Mid-Day's report, social media users expressed frustration, saying it feels like every second road in the city is being dug up. "Every second road in the city seems to be dug up. 26 December,2024 02:42 PM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentShiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Thursday accused Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of protecting "Beed's Naxals", who he said have made "dear sisters" from the district widows, reported news agency PTI. Talking to reporters in Mumbai, Sanjay Raut claimed there have been 38 murders in Beed in the last few years. "'Urban Naxals' is a favourite word of Fadnavis. When will you act against 'Beed's Naxals'," he asked, reported PTI. The opposition has been attacking the ruling Mahayuti government in the state over the abduction and murder of Santosh Deshmukh, the sarpanch of Massajog village in Beed district, on December 9. It has alleged that the government failed to take stern action in the case and gave a long rope to a minister's aide. Raut said an all-party morcha had been called on December 29 to demand action against the "real killers" of Deshmukh. "The chief minister should end Naxalism in Beed. Does RSS, Fadnavis and BJP support Naxalism in Beed which has made our dear sisters in the district widows? The mastermind (in the Deshmukh case) is in the cabinet," he alleged, reported PTI. The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader said Fadnavis should remember that he has kept the home ministry to himself not to "destroy" opponents or "protect" his political workers and leaders, but to serve common citizens of the state. During the recent winter session of the Maharashtra legislature, Opposition leaders alleged that Valmik Karad, an 'associate' of minister Dhananjay Munde, was involved in the Deshmukh case, though Karad has not been named in the FIR. The Superintendent of Police of Beed was transferred after the murder triggered a political firestorm. Together for political power, not ideological reasons: Sanjay Raut takes dig at Mahayuti alliance Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut on Monday took a dig at the Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra, saying that they are together for political power and not because of ideological similarities. He also said they focus on fulfilling their party's financial needs and then only come together to form the government. "No matter how much those in the coalition government say that they are together because of ideological reasons, it is not like that. They come together for political power. They focus on fulfilling their party's financial needs and then come together to form the government," Raut told reporters in a press conference. (With inputs from PTI)

26 December,2024 12:06 PM IST | Mumbai | Faizan KhanThe Navi Mumbai police have registered a case against the owner of a private company and four other individuals for allegedly defrauding 36 people of over Rs 2 crore in a land sale scam, an official confirmed on Thursday. According to the police, the accused had been engaged in fraudulent land deals with the victims since October 2017. The accused reportedly promised to sell land located at Jui in the Uran area of Navi Mumbai. Over the course of these transactions, the victims paid a total of Rs 2.07 crore for the supposed land purchases. However, the victims never received possession of the land as promised, nor did the accused return their money, the official from the Vashi police station stated. The defrauded individuals filed a complaint after several attempts to recover their money or secure the promised property went unanswered. Based on their complaint, the police filed a case on Tuesday against the owner of the private company and four other individuals associated with it. The charges include cheating, as well as violations related to fraud and dishonesty under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The accused, whose names have not been disclosed yet, were allegedly running the fraudulent land-selling operation through the company, which lured buyers with promises of prime land deals at a discounted rate. The victims, unaware of the deceit, had paid for the property with the hope of completing their transactions. However, as the months passed, it became clear that the accused had no intention of honouring the agreements. The police are now investigating the case further, and the accused are expected to face charges that could lead to serious legal consequences. The police have also issued a warning to prospective land buyers to thoroughly verify the legitimacy of the property deals before making any payments. The investigation is ongoing. In a separate incident a 48-year-old doctor has allegedly been duped of Rs 70 lakh by three persons, including a woman, who offered to sell him a flat in Maharashtra's Navi Mumbai township, police said on Thursday. The accused showed a flat located in Roadpali area of Kalamboli to the doctor and expressed their intention to sell it to him despite the fact that it had been already sold to someone else.
26 December,2024 11:11 AM IST | MumbaiFour walls in Colaba are getting a facelift thanks to wall art that is both apt and uplifting. There is the army wall, opposite the Sassoon Dock exit gate, which is getting an artsy makeover. “Here, we are making pictures of old-style transportation like carts,” said activist Bella Shah. “The point is to make people aware that we had modes like these in the past. Contrast them with hi-tech cars zipping past and the difference is stark but even more arresting.” Wall artist Jeevan Wankhede, with his team, said as he was putting some touches to the other wall, known as N T Pool Wall. “We have used watercolours, this will not wash off in the rain. It is challenging to paint on slightly undulating surfaces. As artists, we have to remember that we are painting for both, pedestrians and car passengers. The pedestrian may have the time to stop ‘n’ stare, and the car passenger may only have a minute. We have to capture the attention of all kinds of audiences. That is the real challenge of wall art.” The N T Pool wall has pictures from the Navy. Murals depecting modes of transportation from the years gone Said Shah, “The Navy had sent us these pictures to paint as wall art. There are several Naval vessels, some missions. The overall impression is one of valour on the high seas. It was important we capture that. Every picture gives a message and at the same time, is also open to interpretation of passersby and those who witness this. If it makes you think about the gallantry of our men and women in uniform, that surely makes a mark.” The water is yet another motif of the wall art near DSK Towers, Cuffe Parade. “The theme is underwater,” said Shah. “Here, it was essential that marine life is captured. What the artists really wanted to show through that is the power of water, its depth, strength and the life that abounds in it.” The bus depot wall opposite the Women's Graduate Union Hostel in Colaba, has paintings of buses, as “there is a bus station close by,” said Shah. “The idea is to make the scenarios both relevant and relatable. Today, there are a dwindling number of buses in Mumbai. I have to think, one day our buses will also become part of nostalgia, though we hope not,” said Shah. Colaba has always believed in saying it with the paints and brush. Last year, we had six panels of wall art at Kittridge Road, Colaba giving a historical feel. At that time, the accent was on city landmarks like the CSMT, Mumbai University Clock Tower and others. Earlier, at least 32 panels on the boundary wall of Cooperage football ground, opposite the Campion School in Colaba had wall art depicting games of old like marbles, tyre ‘n’ stick, seven tiles, hopscotch etc. It was an attempt to bring back and showcase the joy of simplicity in today's age when children are playing games on their mobile phones. The artists said about their current work, “We still have a few finishing touches. This is a New Year's gift to this corner of SoBo. Profundities and past aside, if citizens simply enjoy this work, then it is mission accomplished.”

26 December,2024 10:20 AM IST | Mumbai | mid-day online correspondentJatinder Singh, alias Jyoti, the alleged terrorist who was recently apprehended at a Metro construction site in Mankhurd by the NIA, had worked as a crane operator at Metro sites in Delhi and Lucknow, according to sources. Jatinder is alleged to have ties to the Khalistani group Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). The new information came to light through his employer, Gill Enterprises, based in Kalamboli. The company had hired Singh to operate a crane at the Mankhurd Metro site, which is part of the Mumbai Metro Line 2B project awarded to Ahluwalia Contracts (India) Ltd. Speaking to mid-day, Amarjeet Singh, the owner of Gill Enterprises, expressed concerns about the lack of proper background verification processes. “Nobody verifies the background of the person before hiring. I only checked his work experience, which showed he had previously worked on Metro projects in Delhi and Lucknow and the first phase of the Mumbai Metro Line 1 [from Ghatkopar to Versova]. He provided all the required identity cards and appeared to have experience operating cranes,” Singh stated. An undated photo of the alleged terrorist who officials said was instrumental in supplying weapons to Babbar Khalsa International militants Singh further elaborated, “There were no complaints about his behaviour, and nobody at the site noticed anything suspicious about him. He used to focus on his work. He was introduced to me by someone in Kalamboli, who claimed to be his uncle. Since I knew this person, I checked all his details, including his driving licence and Aadhaar card, before hiring him. He was earning a salary of Rs 27,000 per month.” Contract suspended Singh also revealed that his contract with Ahluwalia Contracts (India) Ltd had been suspended. The company had been hiring his crane for Metro construction work for the past few months, with the agreement set to expire in March next year. “What wrong have I done? My contract was suspended, and I was asked to remove my crane from the site by the manager of Ahluwalia. I asked them how many people working at the site were actually verified. Just because somebody got arrested, I am now suffering for no fault of mine. This is going to cost me around Rs 4 lakh to Rs 5 lakh, and now I need to find another site for work,” Singh said. Jatinder Singh’s purported Aadhaar card According to Singh, Jatinder had provided extensive details when he was hired, claiming to have worked with the Delhi Metro in 2016 and the Lucknow Metro as a crane operator. His resume also mentioned working on the Mumbai Metro project in 2008, likely during the Ghatkopar to Versova phase. “In addition to this, he produced ID cards and documentation of his employment with leading construction companies,” Singh added. Sources within the Mumbai police have stated that they are verifying Jatinder’s profile and, so far, have not found any criminal history linked to him in Mumbai. Officials are also questioning individuals at the Metro car shed who were close to Jatinder or living with him to ensure they are not connected to any of his activities. Singh was arrested by the NIA on Monday in connection with the Punjab terror conspiracy case involving the BKI. According to the NIA, Singh was a close associate of designated Khalistani terrorist Lakhbir Singh, alias Landa, and gangster Bachitar Singh, alias Pavitra Batala. He was allegedly involved in providing weapons to another accused in the case, identified as Baljit Singh, alias Rana Bhai, and had been absconding since July this year.
