On Thursday night, Shashikant Waghole (36) was driving home with his family. When he reached Erandwane, he found a two-wheeler parked across the road and a man, now identified as builder Gajendra Pawar, talking on the phone. Waghole asked Pawar to make way for his car.

"Pawar started abusing my husband and claimed that the entire road was empty. He also threatened my husband. We were moving ahead, when a group of five to ten people stopped our path and started attacking us," recalled Swati Waghole, Shashikant's wife. She claimed that the men smashed the car windows using bamboo sticks and snatched two gold necklaces worth Rs 2.25 lakh.

While the Wagholes were at the police station, Pawar also arrived and claimed that Shashikant and his friends manhandled and robbed him and his family of a gold chain and diamond ring, worth Rs 51 lakh.

"The builder was given VIP treatment. He was attended to and taken to a private hospital in his car," said Swati, whose husband and his friends Roni Sebastin (30) and Sandip Tikone (30) were arrested. Swati has approached the district court and moved a private complaint against Pawar through her lawyer, Harshad Nimbalkar.

Inspector Sushma Chavan, from Deccan Gymkhana police station, said, "At present, we have registered both their cases and are inspecting the CCTV camera footage. There was no special treatment given to any of the parties. We will arrest Pawar soon after he is discharged from hospital."

All are booked under Sections 143 (rioting), 325 (assault) and 395 (punishment to dacoity) of the IPC. Gajendra's son, Rohan said, "My parents were on the two-wheeler. A group of ten people assaulted my father and me with bamboo sticks. While my father received seven stitches on his forehead, I received four on my nose. No VIP treatment was given. We are being victimised."
