A small part of the National Highway 48 on the Mumbra bypass stretch will remain shut for 24 hours this weekend, for the final bit of work on the city's most delayed rail line, the Diva-Thane project. It is now nearing completion after an over 11-year delay. Traffic movement could be affected for the period.

Officials said the work will be done on March 6 and on March 21 in two parts. While the road stretch will be shut for a period of 24 hours starting Saturday midnight, the bypass highway traffic will be diverted on alternative roads. “The stretch is particularly important for cargo traffic to and from the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), but adequate diversions are in place and all the concerned have been alerted,” an official said.

While the additional lines of the Diva-Thane corridor have been laid along most of the stretch of the corridor, at one point, it needs to cross over the highway near the busy Mumbra bypass stretch. Two 75-metre-long and 5 metres wide girders weighing 35 tonnes each, one for the Up slow line and another for the Down slow line, that have arrived from Kota, Rajasthan, will be placed over the road.

Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation officials said they require up to 16-20 hours of the highway block to put one girder in place at one go. The girders will make the railway bridge with two new tracks. The cost for the project has escalated from original about Rs 130 crore to Rs 440 crore.
