Three persons were killed and two others injured when their car jumped a road divider and collided with a truck on Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway in Maharashtra's Palghar district on Wednesday morning, police told news agency PTI.

The car with five occupants was heading from Mumbai towards Ahmedabad in Gujarat when the accident took place near Sativali village at around 6.30 am, senior police inspector Jairam Ranavare from Valiv police station told PTI.

The car jumped the road divider, went into a lane on the other side and collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction, the official told PTI.

Three car occupants died on the spot while two others were injured, the official told PTI, adding the vehicle was completely damaged.

After being alerted, local police and firemen rushed to the spot.

Earlier on August 29, a truck caught fire on Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway in Maharashtra's Palghar district, affecting traffic on the busy route for a couple of hours, police said.

No one was injured, PTI reported quoting the police, adding the truck was completely charred in the blaze.

The flames could be seen from a long distance. It was not yet known what the vehicle was carrying.

The truck caught fire near Medvan on the highway at around 8 am when it was proceeding towards Mumbai from Gujarat, an official at the district rural police control room said.

After noticing the flames, the truck's driver and cleaner jumped out to safety, the official said.

Vehicular movement on both sides of the highway remained affected for a couple of hours, he said.

Fire teams at Boisar and Dahanu were alerted, but the truck was completely charred before their arrival, the police said.

The cause of fire was under investigation, they added.

Meanwhile, the police in Maharashtra's Palghar district have arrested two men in connection with eight cases of theft and recovered stolen valuables worth Rs 10 lakh from them, an official said on September 4.

The MBVV police last week apprehended Ramesh alias Ramya Vijaykumar Jaiswal (46) and Vishal alias Balu Vishnu Kashyap (28), both residents of neighbouring Mumbai, senior inspector Pramod Badakh told PTI.

The duo allegedly robbed a 65-year-old man at Phoolpada of Virar and decamped with his golden jewellery last month, he said.

Following the arrests, the police recovered 166 gms of stolen gold jewellery and other valuables worth Rs 10 lakh, the official told PTI.

The duo were allegedly involved in eight similar crimes in the limits of MBVV, Mumbai and Thane which included, Virar, Manickpur, Central, MFC, Borivali Railway, Malad and Dindoshi police stations, he said.
