White a little over 6,000 COVID cases and 75 deaths, November recorded the lowest figures since the beginning of the pandemic last year. In October, the city had 12,285 cases, almost double of what they were in November (6,185), which had an average of 238 cases daily. On some days the number even fell below 200. However, in view of the emergence of the new variant of the virus, it will be crucial for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to increase the number of tests.

Until now, August had the lowest number of cases and deaths at 8,549 and 118 respectively. As the state government opened up the city in phases, since mid-August the cases started to increase. After a slight surge in September and October, the infection rate went down in November.

Even the active cases in the city have come down. As of November 27, there are 2,254 active cases. On August 31, there were 3,106 active cases.

November recorded 75 deaths, around 10 per cent of which occurred in the below 60 years group. In October, 119 deaths were registered. The maximum number of deaths was recorded in May 2020, when 2,409 people lost their lives due to COVID. In April 2021, the city witnessed 1,940 deaths. As per the official record, 16,326 people died due to the pandemic.

As the infection came down eventually over the past couple of months, the number of tests also decreased. Especially, during the festival days from November 4 to 7, hardly 25,000 tests were conducted per day. In the rest of the month, 32,800 tests were conducted daily as against 35,250 tests per day in the previous month.

“In the fourth genome sequencing report, which was conducted in November, all the cases were found to be either of Delta variant or Delta derivatives. As there wasn’t any new variant, the infection rate was low. It was also found that the four deaths (among tested) were of people who were not vaccinated,” said a BMC official.

Speaking to mid-day, additional commissioner of the BMC, Suresh Kakani said, “We are keeping an eye on the new variant of the virus. People have to continue observing COVID protocols like wearing masks and following social distancing.”
