The civic body has suspended three officials after learning of the incident
Deceased Ramesh Parmar
A 25-year-old Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) employee, who worked as a sweeper in the P-South ward, committed suicide by consuming poison at the municipality office on Friday. Police said that he took the extreme step because he had not been paid for the past two years, and whenever he asked for his salary, his seniors would say that they had not received his service file. In view of this, the BMC has suspended three officials.

On Thursday night he was rushed to the trauma centre of a nearby hospital and later shifted to KEM hospital, where he died. The deceased, identified as Ramesh Parmar, was a resident of Jogeshwari. He joined the civic body as a sweeper in 2019 after his father Jagdish Parmar died. The three suspended officials have been identified as senior clerk Samira Manjrekar, Anita Naik and clerk Pankaj Khillare, all of whom were working in P-South ward. Deputy Municipal Commissioner of Solid Waste Management (SWM) department Sangita Hasnale issued the suspension order. The Goregaon Police are in the process of registering a case in the matter.
Speaking with mid-day, Ramesh’s uncle Pitambar Parmar said, “Ramesh has a younger brother, who is mentally unstable. The entire family’s responsibilities were on him. He had not been paid his salary for the past two years. Most of the days he would go off to sleep without eating anything at night. He even begged for food. Ramesh was also in debt and his health condition was bad. His service file was stuck somewhere, as the officials told him the same. On Thursday, he consumed poison while he was at the ward office. We did his final rites on Friday morning. We demand strictest action against the officials who are responsible for his death.” Pitambar further said, “After my brother’s death, Ramesh was helpless and he didn’t even get his father’s pension. His financial condition was also bad.”
