Bharatiya Janata Party MP Gopal Shetty from the north Mumbai constituency, with a significant Gujarati population, has called for an extension of the hours for dandiya celebrations in private housing societies during the Navratri festival. Shetty, in his demand, seeks permission for housing societies to continue dandiya until 11 pm on all days of the festival.

Currently, the Maharashtra State government permits the use of loudspeakers until midnight on three specific days during Navratri, with a 10 pm limit on the remaining festival days. Shetty argues that private housing societies, where noise disturbances are minimal, should have the flexibility to enjoy dandiya until 11 pm daily.
Under the Environment and Climate Change Department's Noise Pollution (Regulation and Control) Revised Rules of 2017, district collectors have the authority to grant exemptions for loudspeaker use on up to 15 days a year, between 6 am and midnight.
In Mumbai, this exemption typically covers three days during Navratri, mainly on Friday, Saturday, and the day before Dussehra. Comparatively, states like Gujarat and West Bengal allow exemptions for loudspeakers throughout the festival.
“In Gujrat and West Bengal, the exemption has been made for all day during the festival. There are two days in reserve and I demanded to use those days during Navratri,” said Gopal Shetty, MP.
The MP has submitted a letter to the chief minister and deputy chief minister, requesting permission for loudspeakers to be operational until 11 pm within private premises during the festival. “I haven’t received a response till today, but I am going to meet them personally on Friday,” said Shetty.
