BMC cancels 10 per cent water cut in parts, postpones scheduled work

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday said that it has cancelled the proposed 10 per cent water cut that was scheduled for various parts of Mumbai city and its eastern suburbs. The water cut was originally planned due to upgradation work at the Pise Panjrapur Water Treatment Plant, where 100 kV electric meters were being modernised. The work was scheduled from 12:30 pm to 3:30 pm on October 7, 8, and 9, officials said. According to the BMC, the maintenance work on Tuesday (October 7) and Wednesday (October 8) was successfully completed. However, the work planned for Thursday (October 9) had to be postponed due to a strike by MSEDCL (MahaVitaran) workers. "The previously planned 10 per cent water cut in the following areas has been cancelled, and regular water supply will continue in Mumbai City Wards including A, B, F-South, F-North and in eastern suburbs' M-East, M-West, L (Kurla East), N (Vikhroli, Ghatkopar, Ghatkopar East), S (Bhandup, Nahur, Kanjurmarg, Vikhroli East), and T (Mulund East and West) "The water supply will remain uninterrupted in the areas," said an official. Meanwhile, the water levels in lakes supplying drinking water to Mumbai have risen following heavy rainfall in their catchment areas. According to BMC data, the combined stock in the seven reservoirs that provide water to the city now stands at 99.04 per cent. As per the BMC on Wednesday (October 8), the collective water stock in these reservoirs is 14,33,262 million litres, which amounts to 99.04 per cent of their total capacity. The BMC supplies drinking water daily from Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vehar, and Tulsi lakes. Of these, Tansa has 98.29 per cent water stock, Modak Sagar 99.25 per cent, Middle Vaitarna 99.20 per cent, Upper Vaitarna 100 per cent, Bhatsa 98.74 per cent, Vehar 100 per cent and Tulsi 99.56 per cent. Bhatsa, Vehar, and Tulsi together form the Bhatsa system. Water from this system is treated at the Panjarpur Water Treatment Plant and distributed to the eastern parts of Mumbai, covering the eastern suburbs from Mulund Check Naka to Sion and further to Mazgaon.

Modi slams Congress for ‘weakness’ after 2008 Mumbai attacks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi slammed the Congress for not taking strong action against Pakistan following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Addressing a gathering at Navi Mumbai, the PM said that Mumbai is not just India’s financial capital but also one of its most vibrant cities. “That’s why terrorists targeted Mumbai,” he said at the inauguration of Navi Mumbai International Airport on Wednesday. Modi claimed that our security forces were ready to strike Pakistan after the terror attack. “Then the Congress-led government showed weakness. Due to pressure from another country, the Congress government stopped the attack,” Modi asserted. Ten terrorists from Pakistan’s Lashkar-e-Tayyiba had come from Karachi (Pakistan) by boat to Mumbai. This terrorist group attacked several places in Mumbai, killing 164 people. While nine of them were shot dead during the attack, Mohammed Ajmal Kasab was caught alive. Later, the court convicted Kasab, and he was hanged in 2012. Modi said that the country has repeatedly paid for this mistake (read as Congress’s weakness). “For us, nothing is more important than the safety of our citizens and national security,” he added. The PM even slammed the MVA (Maha Vikas Aghadi) for stalling several development projects. Further during the address, Modi urged people to push for the use of Swadeshi products. He even stated that reforms in the GST have boosted purchasing power. “Post GST rate cuts, reports suggest that people are buying bikes, cars, and electronic goods. The sale has gone up for everything,” he added.

PM Modi inaugurates NMIA; 'we have built more than an airport', says Adani

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), calling it a proud moment for India and a “long-awaited” step forward for the city of Mumbai. Speaking at the inauguration event, PM Modi said, “The wait is finally over. Mumbai now has its second international airport. This will not only ease the pressure on the existing airport but also help farmers, small industries, and boost the economy of Maharashtra.” The new airport is spread over 1,160 hectares in Ulwe, near Panvel. In the first phase, it will handle 20 million passengers per year, with plans to expand this to 90 million in the future. The airport was developed through a public-private partnership between Adani Group’s Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) and CIDCO, a Maharashtra government agency. Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group said, "In an era where India ascends among the world’s largest economies, we have built more than an airport – we have architected Bharat as a gateway and as one of the world’s most indispensable crossroads." He said, "This is the infrastructure that does not just serve today’s demand, it creates tomorrow’s exponential possibilities. For generations to come, every flight through these terminals will carry not just passengers, but the pulse of a defining superpower and the dreams, ambitions and achievements of a nation reclaiming its place at the centre of global progress." Inspired by India’s national flower, the lotus, the airport’s terminal design blends traditional Indian culture with modern architecture. It was designed by world-renowned Zaha Hadid Architects, an official statement said. PM Modi called it “a living symbol of culture and prosperity.” He said that it will connect Indian farmers and small businesses directly to global markets, making it easier to export fresh produce and other goods. The airport has world-class facilities, with a focus on sustainability, including solar energy, rainwater harvesting, and natural lighting systems. A dedicated cargo terminal, AI-enabled logistics, and a cold-storage facility for medicines and perishables are also part of the design, the statement said. “NMIA is a landmark in India’s aviation journey, uniting cutting-edge technology, sustainability and a passenger-first experience,” said Jeet Adani, Director, AdaniAirport Holdings Ltd. “By complementing CSMIA, it reinforces Mumbai’s role as a global aviation hub and sets a blueprint for future-ready airports nationwide.” The airport's location and multi-modal connectivity will link it to Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu), metros, suburban rail, and future waterway routes, reducing travel time from South Mumbai to 20 minutes, it said. The project was first approved in 2007 but faced delays due to land issues, environment clearances, and resettlement challenges. The Adani Group took over the project in 2021, and construction picked up pace, the statement said, adding that it is set to become one of the busiest and most significant aviation hubs in India.

Mumbai’s first underground metro line inaugurated: Here are the key features

Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated Phase-II B of Mumbai Mumbai Metro Line-3 (Aqua Line), city's first fully underground corridor. Stretching 33.5 km from Aarey to Cuffe Parade, the Mumbai Metro-3 features 27 stations and is designed for 95-kmph speed. The newly inaugurated Phase II-B, stretching 10.99 km from Acharya Atre Chowk to Cuffe Parade, includes 11 underground stations and aims to improve access to South Mumbai’s key administrative and commercial hubs. This phase alone has been developed at a cost of Rs 12,195 crore, forming part of the larger Rs 37,276 crore Line-3 project. The corridor is expected to reduce travel time, cutting the commute from Cuffe Parade to Aarey JVLR to under an hour. It also enhances connectivity to important locations such as the Bombay High Court, Mantralaya, RBI, BSE, CSMT, and Churchgate, while integrating with existing metro, suburban rail, and bus networks. The service is designed to operate trains every five minutes and is projected to reduce the suburban railway load by 15 per cent, eliminate over 6.6 lakh daily road trips, and save 3.5 lakh litres of fuel per day. It will also improve access to over 30 educational institutions, 13 hospitals, and multiple recreational spaces. Recognised as one of India’s most complex infrastructure projects, 17 tunnel boring machines were simultaneously deployed for the construction of the corridor, which is a national record. Technological highlights include low-vibration twin-booted tracks, driverless trains, and a fully air-conditioned and accessible design, including platform screen doors for passenger safety. The line also supports National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) use, enabling contactless travel across multiple transport modes. On the environmental front, the project has undertaken mangrove restoration, planted more than 23,000 trees and ensured rehabilitation for nearly 2,700 displaced families, including ownership flats and rental assistance. With this launch, Mumbai’s Aqua Line becomes the first metro to enter the city’s island core. Following the inauguration, PM Modi praised the Phase-II B corridor, calling it a big step forward for the city's infrastructure and public transport. In a post on X, PM Modi said that this new metro stretch would greatly help improve connectivity and quality of life in Mumbai. He added that metro systems are important for a city’s growth and this project would benefit the whole Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). PM Modi also said the project would help boost business, ease traffic, and improve ‘Ease of Living’ for the city’s people. The final phase connects Cuffe Parade to Acharya Atre Chowk, covering important areas like Marine Drive, Fort, and Nariman Point.

India, UK trade ministers meet in Mumbai to boost bilateral economic partnership

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and United Kingdom (UK) Secretary of State for Business and Trade Peter Kyle held a bilateral meeting in Mumbai on Wednesday to chart a renewed path for the India-UK trade and investment partnership, news agency ANI reported, citing a Ministry of Commerce and Industry release. The meeting marked an important step towards operationalising the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). Both ministers agreed to reposition the Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) to oversee the agreement’s implementation and progress. According to the ministry, both sides reiterated their commitment to a swift, coordinated, and result-oriented execution of the agreement, aimed at unlocking its full potential for businesses and consumers in both nations, reported ANI. The ministers reaffirmed their shared goal of doubling bilateral trade by 2030 by leveraging complementarities between the two economies in sectors such as advanced manufacturing, digital trade, clean energy, and services. Emphasising the transformative potential of CETA, the two leaders discussed ways to maximise its benefits through enhanced regulatory cooperation, addressing non-tariff barriers, and strengthening supply chain integration, ANI reported. A productive round of discussions between Commerce Secretary-level and Director General-level officials set the stage for the ministerial dialogue, which laid a strong foundation for a day of forward-looking deliberations. Ahead of the bilateral talks, sectoral roundtables were organised across key areas including advanced manufacturing, consumer goods, food and drink, science, technology and innovation, construction, infrastructure and clean energy, and financial, professional and business services (including IT/ITeS, education, and engineering). These sessions brought together leading industry voices from both countries and offered valuable insights to guide the agreement’s implementation. The India-UK CEO Forum was also convened, bringing together business leaders from both nations to explore new avenues for trade, investment, and innovation. Co-chaired by senior industry figures from India and the UK, the forum served as an important platform to deepen bilateral economic cooperation and strengthen partnerships across sectors. The discussions reaffirmed both nations’ commitment to a modern, mutually beneficial, and sustainable economic partnership under the CETA framework. The ministers also exchanged views on the global economic landscape, stressing the need for resilient and diversified supply chains amid ongoing global uncertainties. Shri Goyal highlighted India’s emergence as a key growth engine of the world economy, while Secretary Kyle stated that the UK’s deal is “the best ever secured with India,” positioning British businesses to access India’s vast market and drive growth, jobs, and prosperity at home. The meeting concluded with a business plenary attended by senior industry representatives from both countries. Both sides reiterated their resolve to advance a modern, inclusive, and mutually beneficial trade partnership, unlocking new opportunities for growth, investment, and innovation. (With ANI inputs)

Commuter's 'protruding' backpack behind Mumbra train accident that killed 5: CR

A probe by Central Railway has concluded that a protruding backpack worn by a commuter was the cause of a tragic accident near Mumbra in Thane district on 9 June, which led to the death of five people, officials said, reported the PTI. Eight passengers were injured from two passing local trains, resulting in five fatalities. The investigation ruled out any technical fault, sabotage, mischief, or passenger quarrel after examining extensive CCTV footage, eyewitness accounts, and information shared via social media and public calls, officials said, as per the PTI. Hours after the accident near Mumbra on June 9, an eyewitness and co-traveller had said that the tragedy was triggered by a bag worn by a commuter on a passing train after it brushed against those hanging on the footboard of another local. According to the findings, a 30-centimetre-thick backpack worn by a commuter standing on the footboard of the 9th coach (S-11) of a Karjat-bound local from CSMT brushed against a commuter on the footboard of a Kasara-CSMT local (N-10) moving in the opposite direction. The contact triggered a "domino effect", causing two passengers from S-11 and six from N-10 to lose balance and fall. Five passengers died as a result, while others sustained injuries. As per the report, both trains were running around 72 kmph, within the permissible speed limits, while crossing each other at the site. The report also highlighted that there was adequate clearance between the two trains, ruling out the possibility of the coaches of the two trains coming into contact with each other or any technical fault or track-related deficiency. Examination of the two Mumbai local trains, or EMU rakes, at the Kurla carshed showed no defects, though a fresh mark on the body of coach 5341A of N-10 confirmed external impact from a backpack, according to the report, said officials, the PTI reported. The S-11 train was not overcrowded, as it was non-peak hours, while the CSMT-bound N-10 was heavily packed. The railway officials stated that no passenger conflict, intentional sabotage, or track fault contributed to the incident. Following the accident, Central Railway had called on the public and railway employees to come forward with any information to assist with the investigation. (with PTI inputs)

Tata Power electrifies 33.5 km Mumbai Metro-3 stretch from Aarey to Cuffe Parade

Tata Power has been announced as the electricity provider for the newly inaugurated Mumbai Metro-3 Aqua Line, the city’s first fully underground metro corridor, stretching 33.5 km from Aarey to Cuffe Parade. The project marks a significant milestone in Tata Power’s century-long journey of powering Mumbai’s transit systems, from suburban railways to modern metros. With the Metro-3 line now operational, Tata Power continues its legacy by supplying electricity not only to Metro Line-1 but also to this crucial new corridor. To support the energy demands of the Metro-3 corridor, Tata Power has deployed a connected load of approximately 40MW, supplied via its Dharavi, Mahalaxmi, and Saki receiving stations. The power is transmitted through 110 kV lines, backed by a dual busbar system at each station, ensuring an uninterrupted and reliable supply. Combined with the 8MW load for Mumbai Metro Line-1, Tata Power now supports a total metro network load of 48 MW, reflecting its robust infrastructure and capacity to meet Mumbai’s growing transportation power needs. As Mumbai Metro-3 begins to link major business districts, residential zones, and transit hubs, Tata Power’s reliable and scalable energy solutions will play a key role in delivering safe, smooth, and efficient travel for the city’s commuters. This development cements Tata Power’s role as a constant in Mumbai’s transit transformation, connecting past, present, and future through sustainable energy.
