Navi Mumbai: Rides at Nerul park shut for five months, NMMC blames rains, polls

With kids being deprived of the use of amusement rides at the Wonders Park in Nerul for nearly five months now, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has blamed the monsoon and the recently concluded state Assembly elections for the situation.

The corporation has been facing the ire of residents, as the rides have been shut since June and kids have had to return from the two-year-old park without getting a chance to experience them.

After hearing repeated complaints regarding the park, Navi Mumbai mayor Sagar Naik visited it on Monday to check on its condition. The civic body, however, claims that the rides are shut during the monsoon every year to avoid corrosion.

Sanjay Desai, executive engineer of NMMC, said, “The rides had to be shut during monsoon to avoid possible damage. Most of the staff members from the civic body were busy in election duty and, hence, there was a delay in repair and maintenance of the rides.”

Desai claimed that the rides will begin functioning in 2-3 days. Constructed at a cost of Rs 38 crore and inaugurated in 2012, Wonders Park is spread over 34 acres.

The park offers five amusement rides, including a toy train. In addition, it features an open-air amphitheatre, a pond and miniature sculptures of the Seven Wonders Of The World. The entry fee is Rs 35 for adults and Rs 25 for children, excluding the charges for the rides.
