As Mumbai sees a seven-fold jump in just a week, officials are concerned that hospitalisations have also started increasing

New cases in Mumbai soared to 2,510 on Wednesday, registering a seven-fold jump in daily COVID infections in just a week. The dramatic increase has pushed up the test positivity rate beyond 5, showed BMC data. Not just in the city, COVID cases have also begun rising in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, which includes Thane, Navi Mumbai and Vasai-Virar. MMR alone saw 3,173 cases, forming a major chunk of the state’s overall figure of 3,900 infections.

COVID cases have started heading north since last week. On Wednesday, the cases reached a new high, with authorities ramping up tests to 51,843. A day earlier, the city had reported 1,377 new cases with a TPR of 4.25 per cent.

The virus claimed one life during the day. The patient was comorbid and above the age 60 years. The city’s recovery rate remained constant at 97 per cent as 251 people were discharged. The doubling rate dropped to 682 days. The city had a doubling rate of 2,563 days on December 14.
Navi Mumbai reported 177 (96 on Tuesday) new cases, the most in MMR. It was followed by 156 (76 on Tuesday) in Thane city. While Mira Bhayandar saw 85 (33) cases, Panvel reported 76 (29), Vasai-Virar 81 (26), Raigad 25 (11) and Kalyan-Dombivli 52 (32). MMR, excluding Mumbai, registered seven deaths, four from Vasai Virar, two from Thane district and one from Ulhasnagar.
With MMR accounting for almost 81 per cent of the cases, the state’s tally went up to 3,900, showed data from the state’s health department. Maharashtra also reported 20 COVID fatalities. Pune city registered 239 cases. The state’s case-fatality rate remained at 2.12 per cent as 1,036 patients got discharged on Tuesday. Currently, the state has 14,065 active cases.
Numbers rise in Dharavi
Dharavi saw 17 new cases, the most in over 7 months. On May 18, it had seen more cases. At 99, the slum town had reported its highest single-day figures on April 8. It had reported zero cases on most days in the last four months.
85 new Omicron cases in state
As per a state report, 85 cases of Omicron were reported across Maharashtra on Wednesday. Of these, 34 are from Mumbai.
