Two people were killed in an accident on the Western Express Highway in Borivli East. The man and woman were riding a bike when they were hit from behind by a speeding chemical tanker.

According to sources, the tanker driver fled the scene after the accident but later surrendered at the police station. Bystanders took the injured duo to hospital in an ambulance, but they were declared dead on arrival. The deceased were identified as Rahul Radhekrishna, 25, and Jaya Arun Pandey, 24.
Sources said they were heading south towards Borivli on the National Park Flyover Bridge on the Western Express Highway when they were hit around 2.18 pm.
A police team from Kasturba Marg police station rushed to the spot and it was found that the duo was sent to hospital by stopping a private ambulance that was northbound towards Dahisar. Officials recovered mobile phones and other belongings of the victims from the spot.
Rahul and Jaya lived in Bhayander. They were childhood friends and working professionals. On Sunday, Jaya had visited a friend in Dahisar to pick up a dress. She and Rahul were heading south towards Borivli when the speeding tanker hit their motorcycle. Rahul fell and was severely injured due to the impact, while Jaya was critically injured after coming under the wheel of the tanker. “Their relatives have been informed about the accident,” said an officer from Kasturba Marg police station.
The driver, identified as New Mumbai resident Ajmal Ansari, has been booked and arrested under IPC sections 279 and 304(a).
He was produced before the Borivli Metropolitan Magistrate Court on Monday, the officer added.
