The bridge connecting Ghatkopar and Mankhurd will be inaugurated today, and is most likely to be named after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, sources in the BMC told mid-day. An official said that the proposal for the name is still awaiting approval by the corporation’s general body. The bridge that has been under construction for over seven years will be thrown open to motorists post the inauguration ceremony today.

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding the naming of the bridge, as MP Rahul Shewale had earlier recommended that it be named after a prominent Muslim scholar. As this was opposed by BJP leaders, the works committee of BMC suburbs had approved naming the bridge after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The bridge, which is 2.9 kilometres-long, will not only ease traffic woes for those travelling towards Vashi, but also help dumper drivers, as it is directly connected to the Deonar dumping ground.

The bridge comprises a three-plus-three lane, which will shorten the travel time between Ghatkopar and Govandi junctions. The project that was first planned for a smaller distance was further increased after representations from several political leaders. The total cost of the project is Rs 580 crore.

Speaking to mid-day, a civic official said, “The bridge will reduce travel time for those travelling towards Vashi or Navi Mumbai. Earlier, during peak hours, it would take over 30 minutes to pass this stretch, but now it will just take about five to 10 minutes.”
