The civic administration has served notices to seven corporators for failing to attend general body meetings, warning them of disqualification. The missives, however, have triggered an exchange between the Shiv Sena and the Congress.

While Sena called the notices a routine procedure, the Congress said the move is politically motivated by the ruling party to reduce its numbers in the civic body.

"The ruling party and the MS (municipal secretary) department have been trying to cut down our numbers by sending such notices to our corporators," alleged Ravi Raja, opposition leader and Congress corporator.

Coming to the defence of the municipal secretary department, standing committee chairman Yashwant Jadhav on Thursday said even Sena and BJP corporators have not been spared.

"Seven corporators including two from Sena, three from the BJP and two from the Congress were given such letters so that they can attend next meetings and be saved from disqualification," Jadhav told this newspaper.

As per BMC rules, if a corporator doesn't attend meetings for three continuous months he or she can be disqualified. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the general body meetings are now being held online. Officials said it was expected of the corporators to be a part of these important meetings.
