Mumbai sees over 1,000 COVID-19 cases despite fewer tests

Despite a fewer number of tests over the weekend, the city reported more than 1,000 fresh cases on Monday. Mumbai’s daily count last Monday was about 855 cases. The city reported four deaths while the state saw 22 and recorded more than 8,000 cases.


The trend of over 1,000 cases continues with Mumbai recording 1,008 fresh infections after conducting 17,849 tests on Sunday with a test positivity rate (TPR) of 5.6 per cent. In the last week, an average of 21,000 tests were conducted each day and the TPR was approximately 5.5 per cent. The TPR was below 3 per cent in the first week of February. Meanwhile, 4,380 patients in the city recovered since Friday, which is almost the same as the number of new cases reported over the same period of time. Of the four deaths reported in Mumbai, three patients had comorbidities and all four were above 60 years of age. 


Meanwhile, Dharavi registered 18 new cases on Monday. The area has a total of 86 active cases. Dadar and Mahim have been reporting more cases than Dharavi, but on Monday Dharavi saw more infections. 


The Mumbai Metropolitan Region saw a total of 1,770 cases including those in Mumbai. Other cities like Thane reported 151 cases, Navi Mumbai 123 and Kalyan-Dombivli 180. Navi Mumbai registered one death on Monday. Pune and Akola circles registered three and five deaths respectively. The state recorded 8,744 fresh infections on Monday, out of which Akola circle saw 1,101, Pune Circle 1,666), Nashik 1,491 and Nagpur 1,697. The cumulative number of cases in the state is 22.28 lakh and the recovery rate has gone down to 93 per cent. About 9,068 patients recovered on Monday and active patients increased to 97,000 after reaching an all-time low of 30,000 in the first week of February.

Lockdown in Thane
Late on Monday night, the Thane Municipal Corporation instituted a lockdown in the areas that have a very high number of cases. The press note states that the lockdown in Thane’s hotspots would be in place till March 31. The note said all lockdown rules would be strictly implemented.
