On Tuesday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said that Mumbai reported the second case of Zika virus after a 15-year-old female from Kurla was reported to have tested positive. This is the second case of Zika virus in the city within a month.

The BMC reported the first Zika virus case in Mumbai on August 23.
Speaking about the second case, BMC stated that the 15-year-old Kurla resident from L ward, diagnosed with the Zika virus and had other comorbidities.
"The patient had symptoms of fever and headache since August 20, 2023, and received treatment from a private hospital. The patient is stable and shifted to
a government hospital on September 5, 2023," the BMC said.
"Survey of households in the vicinity is undertaken around the household. No more suspected Zika virus /Fever cases are detected. The Aedes breeding is found in building compounds and Vector control measures are undertaken," added the BMC official.
Zika Virus disease is a mild illness caused by the Zika virus. The disease is transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitoes. The Aedes mosquito also transmits dengue and chikungunya. "Even though it is a viral disease it does not spread as rapidly as Covid-19," stated the BMC release.
Symptoms of the virus include fever, skin rashes, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, and headache.
"Zika Virus disease is self-limiting and around 80 per cent of persons who are infected with Zika virus are asymptomatic. Those with comorbidities are likely to develop severe infections that may require hospitalisation," explained the civic official.
The civic body has availed the testing facility at KEM Hospital.
Advisory for Citizen by BMC:
- Do not panic, Be watchful of Aedes mosquitoes breeding in your own household / Premises / Societies / Workplace.
- To prevent mosquito breeding - cover all water tanks and containers with tight lids.
- Use bed-net at home during Zika Virus fever to prevent mosquito bites so as to interrupt transmission.
- To avoid mosquito bites during day time wear full-sleeved clothing and apply mosquito repellent.
- In case of any fever complaint, please contact your family doctor or go to the nearest BMC Health Post / Dispensary / Apla Dawakhana / Hospital.
