Mumbai reports over 5,000 COVID-19 cases on second consecutive day

The city reported more than 5,000 COVID-19 cases on the second consecutive day on Thursday. There were 5,504 cases recorded after approximately 47,000 tests with a test positivity rate of 12 per cent. At least 14 deaths were recorded in the city on a single day, the maximum since January. BMC officials say that the trend of more cases will continue as they increase and further intensify testing. The state recorded 35,952 cases due to a higher number of cases in MMR with Kalyan Dombivali and Thane recording 1,000 cases each. The death toll increased to 111 in the state.

“Over 47,000 tests had been conducted, up from 22,000-23,000 in the last week. We are further increasing the number of tests to 60,000,” said Iqbal Singh Chahal, municipal commissioner. A total of 46,869 tests including RT-PCR and antigen were conducted. Till now the corporation has conducted 57,627 tests. These are apart from those conducted at hospitals and camps.


At least 2,281 patients recovered and were discharged on Thursday. The number of active patients in the city climbed up to 33,961. The number of deaths also increased slightly. The city registered 14 deaths. Of these, 7 had comorbidities,10 were above the age of 60 years, 3 deaths were between 40 to 60 years of age and one was 
below 40 years of age. 

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) reported 10,062 cases, including the ones in Mumbai. Thane recorded 980 cases, Navi Mumbai 756 and Kalyan-Dombivali 1027. The MMR, excluding Mumbai, witnessed 12 deaths out of which seven were reported in Vasai Virar. There is a slight hike in the cases across the state. Pune circle reported 7,391 cases, Nashik with 6,493 and Nagpur had 4,556 cases. Nagpur reported 25. Pune reported 21 and Nashik reported 16 deaths. 

A total of 20,444 patients were discharged across Maharashtra, and the number of active cases increased to 2.62 lakh. The state had around 30,000 active cases in the first week of February.
