Mumbai reported 704 malaria cases in August so far, as per the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data.

According to data shared by the civic body, a reduction in leptospirosis, gastro, chikungunya and H1N1 cases is observed in this week (August 14 -20) when compared to last week (August 7 - 13).

The report further stated that Mumbai also reported 217 leptospirosis cases, 495 dengue cases, 100 H1N1 cases and 660 gastro cases from August 1 to 20, 2023.

Dr Urvi Maheshwari, Internal Medicine Expert, Zynova Shalby hospital, said, "Malaria, dengue, leptospirosis and gastro cases are on the rise in Mumbai in people of all age groups. Every day 15 to 20 patients with infectious diseases come to the OPD of the hospital. 8 to 10 of these patients have to be admitted to the hospital and treated."

The BMc stated that in 2023, cases increased due to an increase in reporting units from 22 to 880. These units include BMC dispensaries, BMC Hospitals, HBT clinics, additional private labs, and private hospitals.

"No significant rise is observed in malaria, dengue and hepatitis cases in this week," the BMC said.

"The common  symptoms that people come with in the OPD are fever, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, fatigue, muscle and joint pain. Everyone should take utmost care by using mosquito nets while sleeping, opt for mosquito repellents, avoid water stagnation near house or work place," Dr Urvi added.

"Citizens should not wade through flood water to prevent leptospirosis. Do not self-medicate as it can be risky," the doctor futher added.
