Mumbai on Tuesday reported 562 new coronavirus infections, the fifth instance of under-600 case count this month, and 12 fresh fatalities, while 629 patients recovered from the disease, the city civic body said. With this, the tally of Covid-19 cases jumped to 7,21,526, while the death toll increased to 15,426, according to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) updated data.

Mumbai has witnessed a decrease in new cases and fatalities as compared to Monday, when the city had registered 608 infections and 18 deaths. This is the fifth time since the beginning of this month that the financial capital of the county has reported less than 600 Covid-19 cases in a day. Earlier on June 14, June 15, June 21 and June 22, Mumbai had logged 529, 575, 521 and 570 new cases, respectively.

The BMC said 629 patients were discharged from hospitals during the day, pushing the cumulative number of recovered cases to 6,95,425. Mumbai now has 8,371 active Covid-19 cases. According to the civic body, so far 71,04,722 COVID-19 tests have been conducted in the city, including 31,769 tests in the last 24 hours.

Mumbai has a Covid-19 recovery rate of 96 per cent, while the average growth rate of cases between June 22 and June 28 was 0.9 per cent, the BMC said. The case doubling rate in Mumbai is 721 days, as per the data. Mumbai has 10 active containment zones in slums and ''chawls'' (old row tenements) and 79 sealed buildings (where a certain number of residents have been found coronavirus positive), the BMC said.

The city had reported the highest-ever 11,163 Covid-19 cases on April 4, while the most deaths in a day during the second wave - at 90 - were recorded on May 1.
