Mumbai records more than half of Maharashtra’s Covid-19 cases

Following 922 cases on Sunday, Monday too saw high numbers as city accounts for 809 of state’s 1,426 cases reported in last 24 hours

After increasing for five consecutive days, the number of COVID-19 cases in the city declined slightly on Monday. However, the city’s numbers account for more than half the state’s tally. The city reported 809 cases and three deaths. In the state, there were 1,426 cases and 21 deaths. The state saw 26 more cases of the Omicron variant, out of which 11 are from Mumbai. 


The city had recorded 922 fresh infections on Sunday, up from 204 on December 20 with a higher test positivity rate at 2.65 per cent. 


All the deceased patients in Mumbai were comorbid and above the age of 60 years. The city’s recovery rate remained constant at 97 per cent as 335 people recovered and were discharged on Monday. The doubling rate continues to see a drop and was at 967 days.

The city’s tally of omicron cases is 84 cases. Out of a total of 167 omicron cases in the state, 72 persons have been discharged. 

As per a report of the state health department, 1,426 cases were reported with 21 deaths across Maharashtra. The state’s case-fatality rate remained constant at 2.12 per cent as 776 recovered and got discharged on Monday. Currently, the state has 10,441 active cases. 

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region, excluding Mumbai, didn’t see much change in the number of new infections. As per state numbers, 1,072 cases were reported in MMR including the ones from Mumbai. 

Apart from Mumbai, Navi Mumbai reported 79 daily cases, the most in MMR. It was followed by 78 in Thane city. While Panvel saw 27 cases, Vasai-Virar reported 20 cases each,  Raigad recorded 11 cases and Kalyan-Dombivli reported 28 cases. 

MMR, excluding Mumbai, registered four deaths, two were reported from Vasai-Virar and two from Thane rural.
