Mumbai has recorded 249 leptospirosis cases in July so far, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) data has highlighted.

Due to heavy rainfall in the city, there has been an increase in leptospirosis cases in Mumbai, stated the civic body.

Up to July 18, Mumbai reported 104 cases in July this year. Within a week, there has been a rise in 145 new cases of leptospirosis in Mumbai

According to the release by the civic body, "A comparison of the current week to the last week (i.e. 9-16 July), shows that only leptospirosis cases are on the rise this week, however, there is no increase in gastroenteritis, malaria, or dengue cases, and a majority of these cases are being treated in the outpatient department".

Last month, 97 leptospirosis cases were reported in Mumbai.

Around 87,985 people were given prophylaxis for leptospirosis in the city.

"The cases have increased due to an increase in reporting units from 22  to 880.  These units include BMC dispensaries, BMC Hospitals, HBT clinics, additional private labs, and private hospitals," stated the release.

While last year in July, Mumbai reported 65 cases of leptospirosis.
