The final report on a Comprehensive Transport Study (CTS-2) that will guide civic corporations and state bodies to plan infrastructure development in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region for the next 20 years was released by CM Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday. The study has recommended 487 km of Metro lines, 232 km of suburban network, 533 km of exclusive bus lanes and an additional road network of 1,264 km in MMR by 2041.

An MMRDA press release said the study outlines transportation strategies and guidance needed to attain the vision under long term (2041), medium term (2031) and short term (2026) scenarios. It underscores the significance of transport to support the economic growth and social well-being in MMR.

Mumbai and satellite areas should have 4 interstate bus terminals, 13 inter-city bus terminals, 5 inter-city rail terminals, 5 major and 14 minor truck terminals and 25 passenger water terminals in the next two decades, says the study, apart from more traffic management measures like flyovers, elevated roads, subways, skywalks and cycle tracks. At the event, there was also a panel discussion on ways to transform MMR into a sustainable metropolis.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray releases the report on the Comprehensive Transport Study on Thursday.

Releasing the report, the chief minister said, “Government and administration have one single duty to serve the people and give them facilities. Planning is a continuous process. A transport system is the bloodstream of our city and our needs are increasing and planning is a must to follow these needs. Today, the percentage of people travelling through public transport has reduced as seen by the numbers.

One reason could be Covid-related lockdown. But it will increase only when we give a clean and neat public transport system for the people. However, we should not kill the environment while going for development.” Eknath Shinde, state’s minister of urban development, was also present at the event.

MMRDA chief S V R Srinivas, “The future transportation envisages a seamless, integrated system that would facilitate commuters to travel across the region without major inconvenience using various modes of transport. The use of public transit has been emphasised to enhance mobility, accessibility and reduction of the carbon footprint.”
