Building crash kills 1

The front portion of a building near Bhayandar railway station collapsed on Thursday morning after a heavy rainfall since Wednesday.

Officials recovered one unidentified body from under the rubble. Two others sustained minor injuries. “The front portion of the building, which also has shops, collapsed. The building had been emptied by the municipal corporation four days ago as it was not in a good condition,” said Maruti Gaikwad, head, disaster management, Mira-Bhayandar Municipal Corporation. The crash also damaged an auto-rickshaw.

Man falls into drain

According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Chandan Shaha, 25, fell into a drain at Kurar village in Kandivli West on Wednesday evening. The fire brigade sent personnel for the rescue work, but they had to stop as it was dark. The search resumed on Thursday, but there was no success.

Rly wall collapses

A safety wall of approximately 20 feet in length and 6 feet in height fell near platform No. 2 of the railway station in Thane West. The incident occurred around 3.53 pm on Thursday, said an official from the Thane Municipal Corporation.

Tree falls

Until 6 pm on Thursday, the BMC received calls regarding incidents of 25 tree/big branches falling. On Wednesday, the civic body received 56 such calls. A tree fall incident in Pitamaha Ramji Nagar in Ghatkopar West around 10 am on Thursday triggered a small mudslide.

As a precautionary measure, BMC’s N ward officials shifted around 100 residents from 25-30 houses in the area to a civic school nearby.

150 shifted in Mahim

A two-storey building at Haji Qasam in Mahim West partially collapsed at 5.30 pm on Wednesday.

The BMC shifted more than 150 residents to a nearby school as a precaution. There was no death or injury.

Dangerous dwellings

Between 1992 and 2023, close to 310 people died and more than 300 others were injured in landslide accidents in the city. RTI activist Anil Galgali said, “In Mumbai, 257 places are classified as dangerous landslide-prone areas. Mumbai Slum Improvement Board (MSIB) had recommended to the state government to relocate 9,657 of the 22,483 huts in these areas at priority.

It was proposed to protect the remaining huts by security walls around the hills.

If authorities had acted in time, the deaths of people living in hilly areas could have been prevented.”
