The BMC will get 75,000 doses of Covishield from the state government on Thursday, thus paving the way for uninterrupted vaccination at least for a few days at government- and civic-run centres. Officials said this would be possible after a circular allowing for vaccinations only with prior appointment comes into effect on Friday.

The civic body is still waiting for stock for the age group of 18-44 years. Owing to the priority given to beneficiaries waiting for their second dose, over 41,000 people got it on Thursday. Suresh Kakani, additional municipal commissioner, said, “Once we get additional doses, we will be able to start three more vaccination centres for the age group of 18 to 44.”

A majority of walk-ins amid the crowds coming for the vaccine is causing chaos at the centres. The BMC has said that it is for the citizens to behave responsibly. Sources said police may be deployed to look after the security at various centres as crowds have become unmanageable in some instances.

On Thursday, Commissioner of Police Hemant Nagrale visited Dahisar Jumbo Covid-19 Centre. Soon after gates were closed due to shortage, crowding was noticed at the spot. People also gathered outside NESCO Covid-19 centre.

Meanwhile, 60,153 beneficiaries were vaccinated on Thursday; there were zero adverse effects cases. The turnout of senior citizens was 28,619, of those aged 45 and above was 21,561, the number of health care workers vaccinated was 2,052, that of frontline workers was 5,085 and that of those aged 18 to 44 years was 2,836.
