Mumbai: ‘My Ghatkopar’ Gujarati signboard vandalised

Shiv Sena UBT claimed it was done by individuals who have an affinity for Marathi culture

In yet another Gujarati-Marathi political dispute, a 'My Ghatkopar' signboard was vandalised on Saturday night, and a Shiv Sena UBT poster was affixed to it. On Saturday, an unknown person broke a signboard with 'My Ghatkopar' written in Gujarati near station road in Ghatkopar East. Shiv Sena UBT claimed it was done by individuals who have an affinity for Marathi culture.

A few years ago, during the beautification of the traffic island between Mahatma Gandhi road and station road, the BMC installed three signboards in English, Marathi, and Gujarati, all of which referenced 'My Ghatkopar.' On Saturday night, unidentified individuals damaged the signboard with Gujarati text and replaced it with a flex displaying the Shiv Sena UBT symbol.

Shiv Sena UBT leader Mahesh Jangam told mid-day, "I am not aware of who did this, but I am certain that the individuals responsible must be Marathi-loving person. In Maharashtra, Gujarati is not an official language, not even a civic official language," he added. According to sources, UBT local leaders had decided to submit a letter to the civic ward office on Monday to request the removal of the Gujarati signboard, but before that could happen, an unidentified person vandalised the board.
