Mumbai: Metro Line 5 to be completed by 2024

MMRDA has undertaken expeditious implementation of 337.1 km long Metro Rail network, to be completed by 2026. 


As part of the metro network, construction of the corridor from Thane - Bhiwandi - Kalyan of 24.9 km elevated corridor with 15 stations has been planned and out of this 12.7 km elevated viaduct with 6 stations from Kapurbawadi to Bhiwandi, the work has been awarded to M/s Afcons Infrastructure Limited and the works have started on September 2019. Completion date for this corridor is December 2024.


The part of alignment is runs through Kapurbawadi, Balkum Naka, Kasheli, Kalher, Purna, Anjur Phata, Dhamankar Naka, and Bhiwandi which will connect Thane – Bhiwandi.


It will provide interconnectivity among the ongoing Metro Line 4 (Wadala to Kasarvadavli) and the proposed Metro Line 12 (Kalyan to Taloja), and with the existing Central Railway. The corridor shall provide an effective mode of commute.

So far, the contractor completed 1233 piles, 218 pile caps, 22 Nos Open foundations, 141 piers at site and 45 Precast pier caps, 15 U-Girders at Casting yard.

On January 22, 2021 , the Contractor M/s Afcons Infrastructure Limited launched the first pier cap which is roughly 60 MT on top of pier No 38 which is located near Balkum of Thane .

Mumbai Metro projects have been declared by Government of Maharashtra as "Public Project of urgency” and “Vital Urban Transportation Project". The metro network is aimed at providing efficient transportation system under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, which will also decongest the suburban rail as well as road traffic.
