Assistant inspector of Worli police station Rakesh Gawli received grievous injuries when a manja got entangled around his neck, cutting it deep, while he was returning from the sessions court on his bike via the JJ flyover on Sunday afternoon.

While the cop has received 10 stitches and is currently undergoing treatment at Wockhardt Hospital in South Mumbai, the MRA Marg police have registered a case against an unknown person and are investigating the matter.
Doctors at the hospital said that the cut had reached close to a vital cranial nerve and that he lost a lot of blood in the incident. Speaking to mid-day, Police Inspector Dhananjay Phadtare, in-charge of Worli police station, said, “On Sunday, Gawli was returning from official work via the JJ flyover. Suddenly the manja got entangled around his neck. The moment he stopped the bike, he fell on the road. He then called the on-duty traffic constable in the area and another officer. They rushed him to JJ hospital, where he was treated and received 10 stitches in his neck. He lost so much blood in the incident that he had to be shifted to Wockhardt Hospital. He is out of danger now but the cut got very close to a crucial nerve.”
Speaking to mid-day, Gawli said, “I received serious injuries in the incident. The pain was too much. Initially, I was unable to speak but now I’m slightly better. Luckily, my colleagues saved me.”
When contacted, Dr. Shraddha Deshpande, plastic surgeon at Wockhardt Hospital, said, “He is out of danger now, but his injuries were grievous.”
