A special court in Mumbai on Wednesday sentenced a 32-year-old man to 20 years of imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl on the pretext of marriage.


The court set up under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act) also handed the victim's sister and her husband 20-year jail term for abetment in the case as they left the girl with the accused, who offered them Rs 2 lakh for bringing the minor to him.



Special judge S C Jadhav held the accused guilty under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the POCSO Act.


As per the prosecution, the victim's cousin sister and her husband were to receive some money from the main accused after his marriage with the minor girl.

The victim's mother claimed her niece's husband had told her the prime accused was looking for a suitable girl for marriage.

On August 2, 2020, the victim's sister and her husband took the girl to the house of the prime accused in Mumbai and left her there, said the complainant (the victim's mother).

Later, the prime accused sexually assaulted the minor girl, said the prosecution.

The next morning, the victim called her mother and narrated her ordeal after which a police complaint was registered, it added.
