“We have arrested the owner and a female labour from the bangle workshop,” said Kiran Kumar Chavan, DCP of Zone XII. The accused Ashfaque Morab (40) and Sabira Shaikh (36) were arrested after victims Chandan and wife Chandni Singh blamed them for the attack in their police statement, taken on Tuesday. The couple and their son Adarsh are currently recuperating at the Shatabdi Hospital.

Family critical
Chandan’s condition is critical, as he has lost his eyesight after the infection from his burns went up to 90%. His wife’s infection from the 40% burns she suffered has been contained. She is also critical, but stable. Their son Adarsh who suffered 30-40% burns is recovering. Doctors are now planning to shift them to the Kasturba Hospital. Dindoshi police sources say the reason behind the acid attack is not yet clear and they arrested the accused only because the victims blamed them.

Meanwhile, the neighbours of the victims allege they did not get any help from the police that arrived at 4 am, only two hours after the incident. Till then, they had ferried the family to a hospital in a cab.

Praying for a miracle
“Their condition was horrible. Chandni’s clothes were clinging to her body and Chandan and their son were in the same condition. I took the family to the Shatabdi Hospital along with my friend and Shabnam Khan (a neighbour) and her family,” said Salim Patel.

“Chandni knocked on our door and asked for help. We could not see anything in the dark but once we switched on the lights, we noticed how severely she and her son were burnt. We put water on them and I asked my brother to rush them to a hospital. We called for a cab, which arrived in three minutes, and took them to the hospital. Since then we have been in the hospital, looking after them and praying to god to save them,” said Shabnam Khan, a neighbour.

Cops hunt for motive
The cops are now looking for the motive behind the attack. They have questioned several local workshop owners and shopkeepers who sell acid, said a police official. During enquiry, it was revealed that acid is also used in the workshop Chandan is employed at for plating bangles, said a police official from Dindoshi police station. The accused were presented before the Borivli Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court today and remanded in a 12-day police custody.
