Heavy downpour on Saturday morning led to waterlogging once again in several low-lying areas of Mumbai. As a result of heavy downpour since Friday, Powai Lake in the eastern suburbs started overflowing on Saturday afternoon, an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the city on Sunday and orange alert for June 14 (Monday).

Speaking with mid-day, an IMD official said: “The city is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall between Saturday and Sunday, with isolated patches of extremely heavy rainfall. During these two days, rainfall in some parts of the city is likely to be around 200 mm plus. However, such areas are difficult to identify…but most of them are located in hilly areas such as Borivli and Navi Mumbai, which might receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.”

The India Meteorological Department's Santacruz observatory recorded 107 mm of rainfall up until Saturday morning, while its Colaba observatory recorded 90 mm of rainfall. “We have noticed that the rainfall has been consistently increasing over the last 24 hours…and it (rainfall) will be at its peak over the weekend,” an IMD official said.

Water stock at lakes
The stock at the seven lakes which provide water to the city increased slightly after steady rainfall over the past two days. On Wednesday, only Vihar and Tulsi lakes situated within the Mumbai limit had received rainfall. With Saturday's rain, the water level of most of the seven lakes that supply water to the city improved. On Saturday, the water stock was 1.86 lakh million litres. Last year, the water stock was 1.88 lakh million litres on the same day.
