Mumbai: Hancock bridge may reopen before monsoon

The bridge has been shut for 6 years

After six years of it being demolished, Hancock Bridge may partially reopen before the monsoon. The construction work was supposed to be complete in 2020, but as of now, only half the bridge will be complete within the next two months.

Hancock Bridge which is near Masjid station on Central Railway was the key link between the east and west. The 148-year-old bridge was declared dilapidated by the Central Railway in 2015 and subsequently, demolished in January 2016. The bridge is being constructed by the BMC and the actual work on the ground started in 2019. It was the city’s first motorable bridge, which was to be assembled and put in place at one go. According to the plan, after the frame of one side of the bridge was put in place in January 2020, the asphalting would have been completed by March 2020. But the plan was delayed for several reasons, including the pandemic as well as an alignment goof-up.

The BMC had realised that a few buildings on Shivdas Chapsi Marg were coming in the way of the bridge’s alignment after laying the first part of the bridge in 2020. Though the BMC has issued notices to vacate the flats, no one is ready to move out.
