A fire broke out in an industrial unit in Mumbai Central on Friday night and gutted the whole unit of packaging materials. No one was injured in the incident as it occurred after working hours.

The fire started around 9 pm in one of the units at Patthe Bapurao Marg in Tardeo. There are several industrial units in the area. The Mumbai Fire Brigade sent five engines to the spot. Fire was confined on the first floor of a ground plus upper one storey structure. Rohan Anubhavne, an eyewitness, told mid-day, “As we got to know about the fire, we went on the Diana bridge. There was a huge crowd of bystanders on the bridge.

The fire broke out in a unit inside one of the narrow lanes. Two of the fire brigade engines were on the bridge started spraying water on the fire from the sides.” He added that the area always remains busy due to several industrial units as well as a commerce app unit which delivers online groceries, personal care and electronic items. The units have lots of packaging materials.

“As we received the call of the fire, we sent fire brigade vehicles from four fire stations. The godown was inside a narrow lane but we managed to douse it with the help of hose pipes,” said Santosh Sawant, deputy chief fire officer of the MFB. The fire was brought under control around 10.30 pm and extinguished by 12 midnight. The cause of fire is still under investigation but as per preliminary findings, it might have started due to a short circuit.
