Mumbai: Fewer COVID-19 cases due to fewer tests again?

With Mumbai recording 855 fresh cases on Monday, it might seem that the infection is once again showing a downward trend, but that is not the case. The day’s tally for the city is higher than what was reported last Monday, even though fewer tests were conducted over the weekend.

The state registered a total of 6,397 cases on Monday. The city had reported 761 cases last Monday while the state had seen 5,210 infections. The death toll on that day was 18. The city had registered more than 1,000 cases on Sunday after conducting 21,943 tests. The number reduced to 855 on Monday, while 16,451 tests were conducted. The test positivity rate on Sunday was 4.8 per cent, which has now become 5.2 per cent. 


Four deaths have been reported in Mumbai. Three patients had comorbidities and all were above 60 years of age. Meanwhile, 876 patients were discharged after full recovery in the city, while the recovery rate has slightly come down to 93 per cent. The city has a total of 9,690 active patients.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region reported a total of 1,627 cases including the ones in Mumbai. Other cities like Thane saw 140 cases, Navi Mumbai 157 and Kalyan-Dombivli 180. There were two deaths in MMR besides Mumbai. One each was registered in Navi Mumbai and Raigad respectively.

Out of the 6,397 new cases across the state, Amravati saw 346, Pune Circle 427 and Nagpur 728. Out of the 30 deaths recorded in the state, 12 were from Akola circle, which includes Amravati. 

The cumulative number of cases in the state is 21.61 lakh and the recovery rate has been down to 94 per cent after a month. A total of 5,754 patients have recovered in Maharashtra and it has 77,000 active patients. It had reached an all-time low of 30,000 in the first week of February.
