Mumbai: ‘Didn’t pay fees? Can’t take exam’ drama now at a Vikhroli school

Parents at the Madhyamik Vidyalaya at Kannamwar Nagar. The school cancelled the exam

After the recent incident of a student being barred from taking an exam at the Sharadashram Vidyamandir International School over non-payment of fees, many students at a Vikhroli East school were similarly barred on Tuesday. Many students from Std V to Std X at the Madhyamik Vidyalaya at Kannamwar Nagar were barred from taking the internal exams. This led to chaos on the campus after parents arrived and argued with the school staff. The exam was cancelled later.

According to a teacher at Madhyamik Vidyalaya, a private aided English medium school, many parents have not paid fees for months, prompting them to take this action. “Parents have not paid the fees for two to three months. They did not budge despite repeated reminders, hence we decided to take action. Many parents barged in on Tuesday to speak to staff. We had to cancel the exams on Tuesday due to the chaos,” said a school teacher. mid-day did not find the school principal on campus.

One of the parents at the school said, “Last week I came to school to pay Rs 10,000. The school administrative staff refused to accept it. Today they did not allow my son to enter the classroom or appear for the exam. The exam was supposed to start at 8.30 am, students reached the campus by 7.30-7.45 am. While some were let in, many including my child were kept waiting for hours and then the staff came and said those who have not paid the fees, will not be allowed to appear for the exam. Many students started crying.”

Another parent said, “Some children were asked to go back home and get fee receipts when they said their parents had paid the fees, only then would they be allowed to sit for the exam. My son found this very humiliating. The school has no right to stop kids from appearing for exams due to non-payment of fees.” The school education department has in some previous cases said that schools cannot bar students from taking exams due to late payment of fees.
