Zen moment in Andheri
Andheri is in for a Pan-Asian treat, both for the belly and the eyes. Restaurateurs Ryan and Keenan Tham, the sibling duo behind the restaurant chain Foo, are launching their fourth outlet in the city, which will be spread across 7,000-sq ft, complete with cabanas, a Japanese Zen garden, and tapas-style fare. The brothers shared that it will feature exclusive new dishes including umami black cod and lobster truffle dumpling. “It will be our first venue in Mumbai to offer tapas-style fare in an indoor and outdoor experience. While the menu features our classics, we’re looking to elevate the experience with a selection of dishes and cocktails that are unique to the outlet,” they shared.
Fly to the moon and back
Here’s some exciting news for Star Trek fans. William Shatner aka the franchise’s famous character Captain Kirk, is all set to embark on a journey to outer space. Ditching the iconic USS Enterprise ship for this foray into the unknown, Shatner is set to team up with American entrepreneur Jeff Bezos’s space travel company Blue Origin. All we’d like to say is, safe travels, Captain.
Beatles buzz coming soon
In support of the film The Beatles and India, a collection of artistes have come together to create a 19-track compilation that features the artistes’ renditions of iconic tracks by the band, that were written by them inspired by their travels to India in 1967. The entire compilation is set to release on October 29. Artistes featured on the album include Kiss Nuka (above, right), Karsh Kale (below, right), Parekh and Singh, Mali, Tejas, Anoushka Shankar and Monica Dogra. “The filmmakers approached me with the idea that they were making an album with music inspired by The Beatles’s time in India, taking their songs from the ’60s with interpretations of these tracks by contemporary Indian artistes. They’re a legendary group for many reasons, and this is more of a tribute to them,” Kale told this diarist.
Art call for October
For all of October, the People Place Project has launched the initiative Look Around October that invites submissions like writings, drawings and photographs on everyday musings. This is the third edition of a venture like this, and unlike the previous years, this version encourages people to submit all kinds of materials based on the prompts posted daily on their Instagram account. “October on Instagram is a time when artists focus on creating artworks. This year we wanted to use all 30 days in different ways, because not everyone can create art, write or click photographs. So we’ve put out prompts, with short prose and verses accompanying them on our Instagram profile that people can use as inspiration when creating and sending in their entries,” said Nisha Nair Gupta (inset), the platform’s founder. Doing their bit to keep art alive
The Teamworks Fine Arts Society is all set to hold the I Believe Art Matters 2021 fundraising initiative to help the artist community. The aim of the initiative is to provide artists the platform and the opportunity to engage in different kinds of cross-genre collaborations.
On October 10, the group is set to host an event that involves performances by artistes like Rukmini Vijayakumar in collaboration with Thavil and Nadaswaram musicians Sunaad Anoor, R Raghuram, and K Thavil Raja, Stefan Kaye (right), Anvita Dutt and more. The event will be held virtually and will be hosted by comedian Abhish Mathew. “The main aim is to help artistes and keep the arts field alive. This is to allow artistes to create something for the sustenance of their art; to revise and revitalise the arts,” Ila Gupta, its director, told us.
